La decisione è stata presa dopo che Scholz, esponente del Partito Socialdemocratico, ha licenziato il ministro Finanza Christian Lindner, presidente del Partito Liberale Democratico (FDP), affermando che aveva rifiutato una proposta che avrebbe sospeso le norme che limitano i prestiti pubblici.
"Troppo spesso i compromessi necessari sono stati soffocati da dispute organizzate pubblicamente e da forti richieste ideologiche", ha affermato Scholz in una dichiarazione, secondo quanto riportato da Bloomberg.
