Fabian Vogelsteller is a German developer, designer, and blockchain architect best known for his foundational work on Ethereum and for co-authoring the ERC-20 token standard, which enabled the first large wave of fungible tokens, ICOs, and early DeFi protocols. He joined the Ethereum Foundation in the network’s early days and quickly became one of its most visible builders. From 2015 to 2018 he helped shape the Ethereum ecosystem by building the official Ethereum Wallet, the first decentralized Web3 browser (Mist), and the web3.js JavaScript library, which became a standard tool for dApp developers integrating Ethereum into web applications.

• ERC-20 token standard – Proposed in 2015, ERC-20 defined a common interface for fungible tokens on Ethereum. It enabled wallets, exchanges, and dApps to support any compliant token, catalyzing the ICO boom, the early DeFi landscape, and a large portion of today’s token economy.
• ERC-725 identity standard – Introduced as a specification for blockchain-based accounts capable of holding verifiable data and permissions beyond a simple key pair. ERC-725 laid conceptual groundwork for more expressive identity systems and later informed LUKSO’s Universal Profiles.
• Web3 tooling – Through Mist, Ethereum Wallet, and web3.js, he helped define how everyday users and front-end developers interact with smart contracts, transforming Ethereum from a raw protocol into a usable platform.

These standards and tools established Vogelsteller as a core architect of Ethereum’s first generation of applications and tokenized assets.

LUKSO and the “Universal Everything” Vision

LUKSO, co-founded by Vogelsteller and Marjorie Hernandez, is a Layer-1 EVM blockchain designed for social, cultural, and creative use cases. Rather than focusing on trading and financial primitives alone, LUKSO targets fashion, digital art, gaming, and creator economies, emphasizing identity, reputation, and ownership of “phygital” (physical + digital) goods.

At the heart of LUKSO is a family of LUKSO Standard Proposals (LSPs), which extend Ethereum’s token concepts with richer metadata, permissions, and interoperability. LSP7 and LSP8, for example, introduce flexible fungible and non-fungible token models, while other LSPs define how profiles, assets, and applications reference each other in a standardized way.

This work supports a broader “universal everything” vision, in which identities, objects, and interactions share common standards that work across applications and even, eventually, across chains. Rather than isolated wallets and one-off token contracts, LUKSO aims to provide a universal language for representing people, brands, and digital items in a consistent, machine-readable form.

Universal Profiles and User-Centric Standards

One of Vogelsteller’s flagship innovations on LUKSO is the concept of Universal Profiles. These are smart contract–based accounts that function as persistent on-chain identities, combining features of wallets, profiles, and asset registries:

• They can hold tokens, NFTs, and other assets, but also metadata such as avatars, social links, and reputation signals.
• They support programmable permissions, allowing multiple keys, devices, or agents to act on behalf of a user with fine-grained control.
• They enable gasless interaction flows via relayers, lowering onboarding barriers for mainstream users and brands.

Universal Profiles are designed to unify fragmented digital identities, so that creators and users do not need to recreate accounts and inventories for every new platform. In Vogelsteller’s framing, they are a foundation for a more “human” blockchain experience, where social interactions, ownership, and governance are native protocol features rather than ad hoc add-ons.

Reversible ICOs and Funding Models

Responding to the excesses of the 2017 ICO boom, Vogelsteller proposed the reversible ICO (rICO), a funding mechanism where contributors can gradually withdraw unallocated funds as a project progresses. LUKSO used an rICO structure for its own token distribution, aligning long-term development with contributor protection and signaling his continued interest in standards that balance innovation with investor safeguards.
