Streamr (DATA) is an open-source, crowdfunded, decentralized blockchain platform for real-time data that seeks to allow users to create, share, and consume data streams on Web3 protocol with powerful tools for monetization. The decentralized nature of the system makes data transfer scalable, secure, sound, tamperproof, and censorship resistant. The platform aims to establish a peer-to-peer network to transport data flow from publishers to subscribers to emerge as a global publish/subscribe messaging service. The network focuses on delivering unstoppable data to unstoppable applications and aims to serve as the real-time data backbone of the global supercomputer. Anyone can publish a new data flow, and others can subscribe to these data streams.

The Streamr protocol is a building block for decentralized applications (DApp), seeking to allow any number of parties to distribute or exchange information without directly relying on a central server to broker data. The system runs by the user community and depends on cryptography to eliminate trust. The platform seeks to establish an ecosystem that allows nonexperts to set up smart contracts, connect to trusted data sources, use secure off-chain modules for data refinement, track the execution of smart contracts, and visualize the flow of data and blockchain events. Smart contracts are just like regular contracts; however, instead of being drafted on paper, these contracts run in the form of protocols on the blockchain.

Further, DATA is the native token of the Streamr platform. The DATA token is an ERC-20 token (an Ethereum token) that seeks to govern the project, incentivize the network, and delegate stake on broker nodes and marketplace payments. Moreover, the token aims to serve as compensation between data producers and data consumers. 

Furthermore, the Streamr community decided to upgrade the DATA tokens in mid-2021. As a result, all old tokens are now under a migration process. The old tokens have been renamed to XDATA, and new tokens use the symbol DATA.

Henri Pihkala and Nick Nylund cofounded Streamr in 2017. Pihkala serves as the CEO, where Nylund leads the business development process at the Streamr platform. Matt Innes serves as chief design officer, a graduate of Swinburne, Melbourne. The head of the Streamr ecosystem is Matthew Fontana. Risto Karjalainen, COO, is a PhD holder from the Wharton School at UPenn.
