Comparison scope: MetaMask extension/mobile vs Phantom extension/mobile, with optional hardware accounts distinguished. Specifications verified September 12, 2026. Hands-on claims: none.

A familiar sign-in button can conceal a different signing model. MetaMask retrieves and decrypts an encrypted phrase locally, while Phantom’s newer Google/Apple accounts use remote signing. Local phrase wallets and connected hardware accounts need to be assessed separately.

Winners By Category

MetaMask leads on EVM network coverage and Trezor access. Phantom has a slightly lower fee on selected swaps. Neither earns a blanket security or lowest-total-cost claim.

MetaMask Phantom
Local Phrase-Account Custody

Ordinary phrase accounts give users control in both wallets. This tie excludes their different identity-account signing models.

Local 12-word phrase accounts, social accounts decrypt an encrypted phrase locally
Local 12-word phrase accounts, new Google or Apple accounts sign remotely through KMS
Security And Transaction Signing

Both provide warnings, but their audit scopes and documented controls do not establish which current wallet better resists attacks.

Default-on alerts, source-available code, 2023 Snaps audit, Demonic mitigated in 10.11.3
Transaction previews, scam warnings and blocklist, proprietary app, 2024 Least Authority audit
Recovery And Backup

Both offer phrase recovery and identity-based access, with different password, PIN and account-discovery requirements.

Phrase export, or identity plus MetaMask password, extension passkey unlocks locally only
Phrase export, or Google or Apple sign-in with a legacy PIN on unmigrated accounts, first account auto-restored
EVM Network Coverage

Arbitrum and Optimism app users have documented network support in MetaMask, while Phantom explicitly excludes those networks.

Bitcoin, Solana, Ethereum, Base, Polygon, Robinhood Chain and HyperEVM, Sui retiring September 24, 2026
Trezor EVM Support

Trezor owners can connect EVM accounts through MetaMask's extension. Phantom explicitly does not support Trezor.

iOS, Android, Firefox, Chrome, Brave and Edge, Trezor and Ledger EVM accounts on the extension
iOS, Android and Chrome, Ledger Flex, Stax and Nano X on mobile, Trezor unsupported
Selected-Pair Wallet Swap Fee

When both rates apply, Phantom’s wallet fee is $0.25 lower per $1,000. Routing and network costs can outweigh that difference. Staking is assessed separately.

Privacy And Data Collection

Both process service and usage data. Account choices, analytics settings and optional financial services change what is shared.

Analytics automatic for social setups and consent-based for phrase setups, custom EVM RPC
Address-to-identifier association with an in-app opt-out, KYC for US Cash bank and card features
Updates, Longevity, And Ecosystem

Both have documented update channels and product changes, without a comparable guarantee of future maintenance.

Chrome Web Store updates, Firefox dropped, Monad ended August 26 and Sui retiring September 24, 2026

The ties apply only to the named features. Different signing architectures and audit scopes are not evidence that the wallets are equally safe.

Custody And Key Control

Ordinary phrase accounts give users control in both wallets. This tie excludes their different identity-account signing models.

MetaMask Phantom
Local Phrase Accounts
Keys sign on the local device
Keys sign on the local device
Google Or Apple Accounts
Encrypted phrase decrypted locally
Remote KMS signing for new accounts

MetaMask and Phantom match on user-controlled, local phrase accounts. Choose between their optional identity accounts only after accepting the different recovery and signing services involved, because this custody tie does not extend to those architectures.

MetaMask and Phantom each create local wallets from a 12-word recovery phrase. The accounts sign on your device. Passwords or biometrics protect access to that installation, but someone who obtains the phrase can access its accounts through another application.

Local Accounts And Remote Signing

MetaMask's Google or Apple setup is available on mobile and extension. Telegram is an additional extension option. According to MetaMask's technical explanation, its backend holds an encrypted recovery phrase, while distributed shares protect the encryption key. Identity authentication and the MetaMask password allow local decryption. This is not a system that keeps the complete phrase permanently off your device.

Phantom distinguishes locally stored phrase accounts from accounts using its Key Management Service, or KMS. New Google/Apple wallets and certain features, including Cash, use KMS. The device holds a cryptographic authenticator that authorizes a request. Phantom's policy service checks permissions, then a remote secure-enclave signer produces the transaction signature. That is a different dependency from retrieving an encrypted backup.

Phantom describes these accounts as self-custodial and permits credential export. Those are product claims about control and portability, not an independent certification of the service. Someone seeking exclusively local signing should choose Phantom's phrase account rather than assume every account in the app works identically.

Hardware Accounts Remain Separate

A connected hardware account keeps signing keys on its device. The software wallet's phrase does not restore that hardware account. Conversely, connecting a Ledger or Trezor does not move an existing software account's keys into hardware.

Security And Transaction Signing

Both provide warnings, but their audit scopes and documented controls do not establish which current wallet better resists attacks.

MetaMask Phantom
Signing Warnings
Default-on alerts on supported requests
Previews, scam warnings and blocklist
Independent Audit Scope
Snaps extension integration, 2023
Specified wallet code, 2024; backend excluded
No clear winner

Neither the historical audits nor the documented warning systems establish that one current wallet is safer overall. For either wallet, match the account and signing method to the funds you intend to expose to applications.

MetaMask's supported-request alerts start enabled in both its extension and mobile app. Its checks can examine the requesting site and transaction payload. Phantom describes transaction previews and scam detection, plus an open-source blocklist for known malicious sites. Neither set of controls guarantees that every harmful request will be blocked.

Code And Independent Review

MetaMask publishes extension and mobile source code under different restrictive licenses. Its extension license permits specified noncommercial uses, while the mobile repository grants inspection and study rights. Calling both clients permissively open source would overstate those permissions.

Phantom's app is proprietary under its terms, even though it publishes some components and third-party audit reports. Least Authority's June 2024 report examined specified wallet code and deep-linking behavior. Its threat model excluded compromised devices and physical access, and its scope excluded the backend, so today's KMS service sits outside it.

MetaMask also has independent audit evidence: Least Authority published its Snaps extension assessment in September 2023. That is not coverage of every current MetaMask feature or every third-party Snap. Both wallets provide vulnerability-reporting channels, but audit dates and bounty programs do not measure which wallet will stop a new attack.

Incident History And Approval Limits

Halborn's 2022 Demonic disclosure named both wallets. Under particular browser-import conditions, recovery phrases could remain on disk and become accessible to an attacker with device access. Both operators published remediation responses. MetaMask identified extension mitigations in version 10.11.3 and stated that mobile was unaffected by that issue.

Phantom's app-disconnection controls do not cancel existing token approvals. Its help center directs users to separate revocation tools for those permissions. Verify the requested asset movement before signing, including on a connected hardware device, and investigate unwanted approvals separately from connected-site lists.

Recovery And Backup

Both wallets provide exportable recovery credentials. The account's creation method determines what restores access after losing a phone or reinstalling an extension.

MetaMask Phantom
Identity Recovery
Linked identity and MetaMask password
Google/Apple access; legacy PIN where required
Account Discovery
Check imported addresses and separate keys
Only first identity account restores automatically
No clear winner

MetaMask and Phantom both have viable recovery routes, but neither removes the need to identify and preserve the correct credentials. For a multi-account holder, checking restored addresses is as important as successfully signing in.

Identity Accounts And Passwords

MetaMask social recovery needs the original Google, Apple or Telegram identity and the MetaMask password. Exporting the recovery phrase gives you a separate recovery route. Its optional extension passkey unlocks a phrase-based local vault, but does not restore that vault on a new installation, even if the operating system syncs the passkey.

Phantom's Google/Apple instructions still require a four-digit PIN where prompted. Accounts that complete its KMS migration no longer use that legacy PIN. Do not delete an old installation on the assumption that every account has migrated. Phantom's extension password unlocks the current browser and does not replace identity sign-in.

After Google/Apple restoration, Phantom automatically restores only the first account. Additional accounts may need manual addition. An empty portfolio can therefore reflect account discovery or the wrong sign-in provider, not necessarily missing funds.

Moving Between MetaMask And Phantom

MetaMask specifically documents importing a Phantom phrase to access Ethereum and Solana accounts. Phantom accepts supported 12- or 24-word phrases and warns that different derivation paths can produce missing accounts. Confirm that the expected addresses appear before treating either import as a complete migration.

Separately imported private keys need their own backup. Hardware accounts need their hardware recovery material. Importing the same phrase into both apps also exposes the same underlying accounts through both installations.

Networks, Assets, And dApp Access

Arbitrum and Optimism app users have documented network support in MetaMask, while Phantom explicitly excludes those networks.

MetaMask Phantom
Arbitrum And Optimism
Supported
Not supported
Shared Core Networks
Ethereum, Solana, Bitcoin, Base and Polygon
Ethereum, Solana, Bitcoin, Base and Polygon
MetaMask wins networks, Assets, And dApp Access

MetaMask wins for users whose applications require Arbitrum, Optimism or a custom EVM network. Phantom remains a practical choice for Solana accounts and staking, with no need to abandon Ethereum or Bitcoin holdings.

MetaMask supports native Bitcoin, Solana and TRON alongside EVM networks. Phantom's current list names seven networks: Bitcoin, Solana, Ethereum, Base, Polygon, Robinhood Chain and HyperEVM. MetaMask covers those networks too, so simple holdings on the overlap do not require two wallets.

EVM Applications And Network Changes

MetaMask includes Arbitrum and Optimism, which Phantom explicitly lists as unsupported. It also permits custom EVM networks and RPC endpoints on mobile and extension. Those settings do not automatically synchronize between installations, and custom RPC selection can disable Smart Transactions on supported EVM networks.

The network controls covered in our full MetaMask review suit users moving between EVM applications. Native Solana support is now part of MetaMask too, including connections to applications that offer its Solana integration. It should not be dismissed as Ethereum-only.

Phantom's network list already omits Sui, while a separate notice schedules the end of Sui functions for September 24, 2026. The two pages do not line up on what is currently available. Existing Sui users should follow the retirement notice and secure recovery access elsewhere, without assuming the listed deadline means every function remains available until then.

Solana And NFTs

Phantom combines its Solana accounts with extension-native staking and PSOL liquid staking. The staking options examined in our Phantom wallet review give SOL holders an integrated choice between validator delegation and a transferable staking token.

Both applications have mobile in-app browsers for compatible dApps. An NFT marketplace still needs the appropriate wallet integration and network. Phantom's support page explicitly excludes Bitcoin app connections, so holding BTC does not give you access to Bitcoin marketplaces through it.

Platforms, Hardware, And Daily Use

Check both the browser and the hardware connection. MetaMask supports Firefox and Trezor EVM accounts, while Phantom’s supported mobile Ledger models provide a different route.

MetaMask Phantom
Trezor EVM Connections
Supported through extension
Not supported
Mobile Ledger
Supported EVM accounts on compatible models
Flex, Stax and Nano X over Bluetooth

MetaMask is the choice here for Trezor-backed EVM use because Phantom explicitly excludes that signer. Phantom's supported mobile Ledger connections remain relevant for users with those devices, so this is not an all-hardware victory.

Match The Signer To The Connection

MetaMask's extension supports Trezor and Ledger among its hardware connections. Its Ledger integration is EVM-only, and Trezor's own documentation also describes the MetaMask connection for Ethereum and EVM chains. Native Bitcoin or Solana in the software account does not extend those hardware integrations to the same chains.

Phantom's mobile Bluetooth options are Ledger Flex, Stax and Nano X. For cable use on extension, its compatibility table names Flex, Stax, Nano S Plus and Nano S. It explicitly excludes Trezor, Tangem and Ledger Nano Gen5, so confirm compatibility before purchasing a signer.

Using Both Extensions

Phantom provides an Always Ask preference that can prompt a choice between Phantom and MetaMask on EVM sites. Some applications still prioritize another installed wallet. Separate browser profiles can prevent the two extensions competing for a connection, although profiles do not protect a phrase that you have copied into both.

Support And Documentation

MetaMask directs support requests through its help-center chat, which starts with a virtual assistant. Phantom provides help-center articles and advertises round-the-clock chat. Those contact routes say nothing about response speed or accessibility quality.

Swaps, Staking, And Costs

Selected-pair fees are close, execution costs vary, and ETH staking charges cannot rank SOL staking returns.

MetaMask Phantom
Wallet Swap Fee
0.875%
0.85% on selected same-network pairs
Integrated Staking
ETH routes with separate commissions
Native SOL on extension; PSOL on both platforms

Phantom's integrated choices fit SOL staking, while MetaMask's quoted commissions relate to ETH routes with different requirements. Neither the staking percentages nor the small selected-pair swap fee difference establishes the cheaper wallet for your actual transaction.

MetaMask's swap service fee is 0.875%. Phantom charges 0.85% on selected same-network pairs. When both rates apply to a $1,000 trade, the wallet-fee difference is $0.25. That small difference cannot predict which quote returns more tokens after routing, liquidity and network costs.

Swap And Purchase Charges

Compare how many tokens each quote delivers using identical assets, networks and trade sizes. MetaMask uses bridge aggregation from services including Socket and LI.FI, while Phantom describes LI.FI routes. Bridge and network charges are separate from the wallet fee, and transfers can fail.

MetaMask's ordinary Buy flow includes a 1% wallet fee within the displayed processing charge, not an extra 1% to add again. Provider and network charges can also apply. Optional financial accounts may follow separate terms.

Phantom's mobile swap instructions can default the payment or destination to Cash. Check that selection when you intended a token-to-token trade. Its fiat funding methods vary by location and provider, so there is no single purchase price that can be compared with MetaMask's percentage.

ETH And SOL Staking

MetaMask takes 15% of rewards from pooled ETH staking and 10% from its validator route, which requires 32 ETH increments. These are rewards commissions, not deductions at those rates from the staked principal.

Phantom creates native SOL stakes through the extension. Mobile users can manage existing stakes, unstake and withdraw. Validator commission and activation/deactivation timing affect that route. PSOL is available on both platforms, charges 4% of rewards and has a 0.1% exit charge. Phantom currently shows PSOL rewards in its extension, not its mobile app. Immediate PSOL exits depend on available reserves, with a slower native-stake withdrawal route when reserves are insufficient.

Privacy And Data Collection

Both process service and usage data. Account choices, analytics settings and optional financial services change what is shared.

MetaMask Phantom
Analytics And Identity
Setup-specific analytics choices and service requests
Policy permits identity associations with opt-out
Public Chain Activity
Transactions visible on their blockchain
Transactions visible on their blockchain
No clear winner

Both wallets have settings and account choices that change data exposure, without a matched traffic analysis to name a privacy leader. Compare your planned login, funding and dApp activity instead of treating “self-custody” as a data-collection policy.

Creating MetaMask through a social identity starts analytics participation automatically, with an option to leave. Phrase-based setup asks for consent instead. MetaMask can associate activity events with public account and transaction identifiers. Disabling analytics does not remove the RPC requests required to display balances and submit transactions.

RPC And Account Information

MetaMask can use a custom EVM RPC or your own Ethereum node. That changes the recipient of blockchain requests, not every service involved in alerts or identity recovery. Its privacy notice permits temporary processing of IP addresses to deliver and protect services.

Phantom's July 7, 2026 policy describes usage data, temporary IP processing and public blockchain information. It permits associating wallet addresses with identifiers such as an email or username for specified functions, with an in-app opt-out. Check Phantom's policy and opt-out settings before using features that link activity to your identity.

Optional Identity Checks

Phantom Cash is a separate Solana account linked to the user's profile. Bank functions and the debit card are available to eligible US users outside New York after identity checks. Payment providers handle those functions separately from local phrase-wallet creation.

MetaMask's purchase providers can also request identity information. Choosing self-custody therefore does not promise anonymous access to every funding or payment feature in either application. Review the permissions of the service you actually intend to use.

Updates, Longevity, And Ecosystem

Both have documented update channels and product changes, without a comparable guarantee of future maintenance.

MetaMask Phantom
Development Evidence
Public release history
Store updates and published support notices
Future Network Support
No indefinite-support guarantee
No indefinite-support guarantee; Sui retirement announced
No clear winner

Both wallets have identifiable maintenance activity, while neither promises indefinite support for every network or platform. For long-term holdings, retain recovery access that does not depend on one installation surviving unchanged.

MetaMask publishes extension releases in its public repository. The release list checked September 12 included version 13.48.0 dated September 11. This demonstrates a recent release record, not that every browser store or installed client has received that build.

Phantom's extension normally updates through the Chrome Web Store, with a manual browser update option. Its support instructions explicitly distinguish updating from reinstalling, which may require recovery credentials. Firefox's discontinued support is a reason to move a Phantom installation to a supported browser, not evidence that the entire wallet is abandoned.

Phantom also ended Monad support on August 26, 2026 and has announced the Sui retirement described above. Losing an interface does not erase assets onchain, but accessing them elsewhere requires compatible software and the correct recovery material. A wallet can add features while withdrawing others.

Final Verdict

MetaMask is our overall pick for broader EVM use. Choose Phantom when integrated SOL staking matters more than custom EVM networks or Trezor support.

Winner

MetaMask

8.2 Very Good
Best For
  • Users who want EVM applications and native multichain transfers in one wallet.

Pros

  • Default-on transaction security alerts
  • Mobile connections to compatible hardware
  • ETH pooled staking without a product minimum
  • In-wallet cross-chain swap routes
  • Publicly accessible extension source code

Cons

  • Swaps carry a 0.875% service fee
  • Social recovery depends on online services
  • TRON dApp support has conflicting documentation
  • Linked Ledger accounts are EVM-only
  • New US and UK Card enrollment is paused
Verdict

Choose MetaMask for Arbitrum, Optimism, custom EVM networks or Trezor-backed EVM accounts. Its native Bitcoin and Solana accounts do not extend those hardware connections beyond their supported chains.

Runner-up

Phantom

8.0 Very Good
Best For
  • Users who want Solana staking and multichain transfers in one wallet.

Pros

  • Transaction previews and scam warnings
  • Ledger Bluetooth support on mobile
  • Bitcoin Native SegWit and Taproot support
  • Published third-party audit reports
  • Cross-chain routing inside the wallet

Cons

  • Core app is proprietary
  • Sui support ends September 24, 2026
  • New native stakes need the extension
  • KMS signing depends on a remote service
  • No native Arbitrum, Optimism, BSC, or Avalanche
Verdict

Choose Phantom for native SOL delegation on extension or PSOL on mobile and extension. Pick your account setup deliberately: new Google/Apple accounts depend on remote KMS signing, unlike local phrase accounts.

MetaMask wins final rating

The overall winner follows our separate review ratings, not a count of category wins. Using both wallets can cover different activities, but separate phrases are needed if you want separate accounts. Check marketplace and network compatibility before choosing either for NFTs.

MetaMask vs Phantom FAQs

Is MetaMask or Phantom safer?

This comparison does not establish either wallet as safer overall. Both provide transaction warnings and have published responses to the 2022 Demonic issue. Their independent audits cover different code and threat models, not every current service. Review the requesting site and transaction details in either wallet, including on a connected hardware screen.

Is Phantom better than MetaMask for Solana?

Phantom fits users who want integrated SOL staking: native delegation starts on its extension, while PSOL is available on mobile and extension. MetaMask also supports native Solana accounts and compatible dApp connections. Choose according to the staking method or application you need, not an assumption that MetaMask lacks Solana.

Do MetaMask and Phantom support the same networks?

They overlap on Ethereum, Solana, Bitcoin, Base, Polygon, Robinhood Chain and HyperEVM. MetaMask additionally lists networks such as Arbitrum and Optimism that Phantom explicitly excludes. Phantom's list omits Sui while a separate notice schedules its retirement for September 24, 2026, so existing users should check the transition guidance.

Can I import a Phantom wallet into MetaMask?

MetaMask documents importing a Phantom phrase for Ethereum and Solana accounts. That does not prove every account or network will appear identically, because derivation and supported address types can differ. Compare the restored addresses, and retain separate backups for imported private keys or hardware accounts. Never enter recovery credentials into a website claiming to migrate them.

Are MetaMask and Phantom open source?

MetaMask publishes its extension and mobile code under restrictive licenses, with different permissions for each repository. Source-available is more precise than calling both permissively open source. Phantom's application is proprietary under its terms, although it publishes selected components and audit reports. Public code or an audit does not certify every installed build.

Is MetaMask cheaper than Phantom?

MetaMask's 0.875% swap fee is slightly higher than Phantom's 0.85% on selected same-network pairs. When both apply, the difference is $0.25 on $1,000. Network charges and the executable quote can outweigh that gap. Compare the same transaction's final output, and do not generalize staking or fiat-provider charges across either wallet.

Do MetaMask and Phantom require identity verification?

Creating a conventional phrase wallet does not require the identity checks associated with financial providers. Optional purchases or payment services can be different. Phantom's US Cash bank and card functions require verification and exclude New York, while MetaMask's purchase providers apply their own requirements. Google or Apple sign-in is also distinct from those financial checks.

Can I use MetaMask and Phantom together?

Yes. You can keep both extensions installed, although an EVM site may open the wrong wallet. Phantom provides a wallet-choice setting, and separate browser profiles can avoid connection conflicts. Reusing a phrase exposes the same accounts through both apps. Separate phrases are needed if you want those accounts to remain independent.
