AMC Theatres to Accept Crypto as Payment for Gift Cards

CEO Adam Aron had said the chain will begin accepting bitcoin as payment for tickets and concessions by the end of the year.

AMC Theatres, the largest movie theater chain in the U.S., is accepting dogecoin and other cryptocurrencies as payment for digital gift cards.

  • Customers can buy gift cards up to a value of $200 per day online in app or in theaters using a BitPay wallet, CEO Adam Aron tweeted Wednesday.
  • On an earnings call in August, Aron said that the chain would begin accepting bitcoin as payment for tickets and concessions by the end of the year.
  • AMC has 593 U.S. theaters and 335 international locations.
  • Dogecoin, a meme-based cryptocurrency, responded positively to the news, hitting its highest value in over three weeks at over $0.27 before subsequently pulling back. At the time of writing, DOGE was priced at $0.244.
