Apple has made few friends in the bitcoin realm ever since throwing down the ban hammer on popular bitcoin wallet apps like Blockchain.info, Coinbase, and CoinJar.

iDevice users even went so far as to destroy their own devices in protest, with some slamming, throwing, and even shooting their pricey electronics to tell Apple they weren’t happy.

Many speculated that the Cupertino, California-based company had shunned bitcoin wallet apps in preparation of their own payment service, which a number of Apple fan sites covering in the topic in recent weeks (see MacRumors and AppleInsider) have reported on.

But could today be the day we learn about the company’s plans with regard to mobile payments (thus shedding light on the banning of bitcoin wallets, provided this was the true reason)?

Today holds significance in the Apple community with the start of WWDC 2014 (or Worldwide Developer’s Conference).

It’s an annual meetup of Apple Developers who shell out a pretty penny to be in attendance. And the first day of WWDC is traditionally reserved for the reveal of Apple’s latest and greatest iOS mobile operating system and newest iPhone.

The company is expected to announce iOS 8 today along with the iPhone 6 (maybe?), which may or may not possess NFC (near-field communications) capabilities to facilitate these mobile payments.

Reports even suggest the company is in talks with major retailers about the project.

It could very well shed some light on Apple’s anti-bitcoin stance, but it’s perhaps more likely the community will be left in the dark — without answers.

If you’re interested in following the company’s announcements, they begin today at 1pm Eastern U.S. time and 10am Pacific Time.

What do you think?
