Proof of stake lowers costs by eliminating the need for high-end computation resources, which is an energy-intensive process. Instead, transactions are verified by those who have staked their funds in the blockchain. In the long run, the network's security of cryptocurrency aims to be independent of energy usage. Thus, the cryptocurrency seeks to be a more energy-efficient and cost-competitive peer-to-peer crypto-currency.
