AMPL is the native cryptocurrency of the Ampleforth platform. AMPL is an Ethereum-based token for which the circulating supply is algorithmically adjusted and changes daily. The protocol adjusts the supply in response to the demand for AMPL. The platform propagates information on price and supply by reacting to nominal exchange-rate information.

The system keeps alternating between modes to achive a price-supply equilibrium by the following methods:;

Ampleforth is algorithmic and uncollateralized like Bitcoin, except that Ampleforth can be used in smart contracts. Smart contracts are just like regular contracts however, instead of being drafted on paper, these contracts run in the form of protocols on Blockchain. The protocol translates price volatility into supply volatility. Consequently, the number of AMPL tokens in users' wallets keeps changing based on price. The main aim of Ampleforth is to provide an asset that is non-dilutive by supply inflation and remains disassociated to the price action of other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.

Ampleforth follows a different set of rules, unlike other assets. For AMPL, the price cannot always be a determining factor alone and requires consideration of supply along with the price to determine gains and losses.

In other words, the token holders hold a fixed fraction of the total circulating supply and do not own a certain number of tokens. When the system detects that the price is too high for AMPL, it automatically increases the supply and decreases the supply when the price is low. This change is propagated to all wallets holding AMPL tokens, and their wallet balance is adjusted proportionally.

This process of automatic supply adjustment is called 'rebase,' and it happens once each day. But AMPL is non-dilutive, which means the user owns the fixed fraction percentage of the network unless they choose to make a transfer.

As per its whitepaper, Ampleforth protocol utilizes a market oracle system to obtain price information wherein independent whitelisted data providers broadcast twenty-four hours volume-weighted average price to a single on-chain aggregator.
