BlackCoin aims to be a secure, anonymous payment system capable of processing transactions in seconds. The cryptocurrency aims to facilitate peer-to-peer transactions in a decentralized manner. One of the earlier adopters of the proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism to secure its network, the Blackcoin aims to become an eco-friendly platform.

According to the whitepaper, in the crypto-community, a common understanding persists that the proof-of-stake protocol has several potential security issues. To start with, coinage can be abused by malicious nodes to gain significant network weight to perform a successful double spend. In addition, honest nodes can abuse the system by periodically staking because of coinage, leaving the network insecure. To cut short, proof of stake has yet to prove the security, economic value, and overall energy efficiency over time. Keeping the said issues in mind, BlackCoin was developed for proving the validity of proof of stake. The platform aimed to include various solutions like taking the coinage out of the equation, changing the stake modifier, using a hash function, and more to solve the problem. The proposed changes aim to improve BlackCoin’s PoS protocol security and were made with optimization in mind. 

Using PoS, BlackCoin seeks to scale for mass adoption while mitigating and plugging potential risks. Some features of the platform are stated below:

BlackCoin (BLK) is the native currency of the platform. BLK aims to be a decentralized and eco-friendly currency with near-instant transaction speed and nominal fees. Traded as a commodity, the token is built upon Proof of Stake 3.0. Owning a BlackCoin token means owning rights to a private key - a password to ‘unlock’ or ‘spend’ unspent transaction outputs (UTXO). Each UTXO ‘comprises’ a fixed amount of BlackCoin. An address may be associated with a UTXO and can only be spent with a private key.
