Aleph Zero (AZERO) is a layer 1 blockchain platform that strives to address the limitations of current distributed ledger technology platforms by aiming to improve speed, validation time, scalability, and security. It is powered by a custom algorithm that utilizes Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) technology to create an efficient and decentralized system. Aleph Zero's unique "hub and spoke" model allows businesses to maintain their private network while interacting with the main decentralized ledger. Aleph Zero operates using a unique consensus protocol that integrates with the Substrate stack. This protocol employs a practical approach to the transfer of value and the extensibility of smart contracts, aiming to ensure fast validation times regardless of the number of transactions. Aleph Zero also uses both zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) and secure multi-party computation (sMPC) to aim to ensure the security and privacy of user data. ZKPs pass a secure and secret key between users, while sMPCs safeguard data across multiple computers, which cannot access the stored data without unanimous consensus. This combination of technologies seeks to enhance internet privacy and give users control over their online personas.

Aleph Zero's versatility is demonstrated by the over 40 use cases currently being developed, showcasing its adaptability across various sectors and applications. These use cases range from decentralized finance (DeFi) and gaming to enterprise solutions. Aleph Zero's privacy-enhancing features based on secure Multi-Party Computation (sMPC) and zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP) can be utilized in applications that require identity verification and are subject to Anti-Money Laundering (AML) policies. The transparent network mode will continue to operate in a permissionless (non-gated) fashion.

Aleph Zero was initially bootstrapped by the founding team in early 2018. The project has since grown, with over 40 individuals contributing to the network's development and adoption. The team's previous accomplishments include the ACM ICPC World Finals, the first prize in the International Mathematics Competition, and the Simons-Berkeley Research Fellowship. The first version of the Aleph Zero mainnet went live on November 10th, 2021. Aleph Zero's Ecosystem Funding Program was launched in 2023, attracting close to 50 external developer teams within the first six months.
