DopeCoin (DOPE) is a decentralized digital currency and payment system based on the cryptocurrency Bitcoin. DopeCoin seeks to be the digital currency for marijuana enthusiasts. DopeCoin was launched to have the native token DOPE as preferred cryptocurrency payment method for the marijuana industry. The DopeCoin platform further aims to provide marijuana enthusiasts with a modern and secure way of doing business in the 21st century. The DopeCoin platform seeks to achieve the goal of mass adoption of DOPE by the mainstream legal marijuana industry.

As per the website, DopeCoin and its sister company, The Smoke Exchange (SMX), built their partnership on a foundation that seeks to use cryptocurrency to solve one of the legal marijuana industry’s underlying issues. The industry has suffered from restricted access to quality advertising channels that meet and serve its needs. DOPE and SMX have come together with innovative ideas to overcome these challenges by providing an alternative financial instrument to an industry that has had restricted access to traditional financial institutions and by embracing and adopting the use of their currency in everyday operations.

The project creators recognized the necessity to build out the infrastructure for DOPE in anticipation of adoption by marijuana dispensaries and other industry players. Hence, establishing a platform for DOPE needed to be easy and seamless. The primary feature of the DopeCoin platform is to allow users to perform pseudo-anonymous transactions that execute in less than a minute while paying.

DOPE is the native token of the DopeCoin platform. DOPE operates on the proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus algorithm.

Adam Howell, also known as Dopey, launched DopeCoin on February 14th, 2014 as the first marijuana-themed cryptocurrency. However, he left the project in the first year, thinking the world was not ready for the mass adoption of marijuana-themed coin. Adam relaunched v4 of the project, named as DopeCoin Gold, in January 2017.

DOPE has a total supply of 200,000,000 tokens.
