What is NGRAVE ZERO?

Founded in 2018 and launched in 2020, NGRAVE ZERO is a hardware wallet that stores the best cryptocurrencies to buy. It offers tier-one security controls to help users avoid online threats, such as viruses and phishing. While leading hardware providers like Trezor and Ledger rely on USB cables or Bluetooth, NGRAVE ZERO provides air-gapped solutions.

The technology enables transaction broadcasting via a two-step scanning process. Users set up outgoing transfers via the NGRAVE LIQUID app, which generates a unique QR code. Once they scan it from the wallet’s built-in camera, the device creates an additional QR code, and it's displayed on the touchscreen interface. The final step requires users to scan the device’s QR code from NGRAVE’s iOS or Android app.

NGRAVE ZERO’s air-gapped process makes it almost impossible for hackers to intercept the transfer. For additional security, users may add biometric verification. The device stores the fingerprint ID internally via a secure element chip. The EAL7-certified custom operating system (OS) offers the highest security level globally, which protects users against physical tampering.

Since NGRAVE ZERO costs $398, it’s considerably more expensive than other crypto hardware wallet providers. In our view, the premium price point suits investors who hold substantial amounts of digital assets and seek the safest possible storage solution.

What Type of Wallet is NGRAVE ZERO?

Like all hardware wallets, NGRAVE ZERO stores cryptocurrencies in cold storage. This security mechanism helps users prevent remote hacking attacks, which remain a significant threat to crypto investors.

As one of the best cold wallets, NGRAVE ZERO takes security to the next level by restricting network connections. While rare, hackers can exploit vulnerabilities in Bluetooth and near-field communication (NFC), which traditional hardware wallets rely on. Instead, NGRAVE ZERO’s air-gapped structure forces users to scan QR codes on two separate devices.

Research shows NGRAVE ZERO is also one of the best decentralized crypto wallets, since it provides non-custodial storage. The device stores the encrypted and unique private keys internally. Crypto investors have complete control over their stored digital assets, which allows them to transact freely. Not even NGRAVE ZERO can access those keys.

Is NGRAVE ZERO Safe?

No storage solution offers 100% protection from hackers and other wallet threats. Yet in our view, NGRAVE ZERO is as safe as it gets. The provider has safeguards against every identifiable risk, including online attacks and physical theft.

Although all hardware manufacturers provide offline storage, NGRAVE ZERO alleviates connection vulnerabilities through air-gapped security. To approve transaction requests, users scan unique QR codes generated by the mobile app in real-time on their device.

After that, the scanning procedure flips, as users scan a separate QR code from the mobile app, which the physical device displays. The optional biometric feature adds an extra layer of security.

If the NGRAVE ZERO wallet is lost, damaged, or stolen, the stored funds remain safe. The secure element chip provides tamper-free protection while users restore their crypto assets remotely.

The Perfect Key feature is one recovery option, which uses the full 64-character string. This method is more secure than seed phrases but also less user-friendly. Alternatively, users can convert their Perfect Key to a traditional 24-word phrase for an easier way to restore their wallet.

However, like all non-custodial wallets, users are responsible for securing their private keys and backup credentials. NGRAVE ZERO’s 4-inch interface helps users review transaction requests effortlessly, yet it doesn’t prevent mistakes. Verifying transfers with an invalid wallet address or wrong network leads to a loss of funds, because users cannot reverse blockchain transactions.

Our NGRAVE ZERO review found the wallet supports fewer assets than most hardware competitors.

It initially supports just 15 cryptocurrencies, including:

NGRAVE ZERO ranks as one of the best Ethereum wallets, since it supports any ERC-20 token, if you add it as a custom token. This includes popular cryptocurrencies like Tether (USDT), Shiba Inu (SHIB), and Uniswap (UNI). The wallet works with all tokens on the MultiversX standard, too.

However, unlike the top Solana wallets, NGRAVE ZERO lacks support for Solana Program Library (SPL) tokens such as dogwifhat (WIF) and Bonk (BONK). Other notable omissions include Tron (TRX), Hyperliquid (HYPE), and Sui (SUI).

On top of standard cryptocurrencies, NGRAVE ZERO users may safely store Ethereum NFTs.

NGRAVE ZERO Hardware Specifications

As a premium hardware wallet, NGRAVE ZERO offers the perfect combination of physical strength and user-friendliness.

The device weighs approximately 214g, and while it’s much heavier than most competitors, the 4-inch touchscreen provides a convenient user experience. Device users view transaction details on a sufficiently sized interface with high pixel density, which reduces errors. In contrast, some hardware wallets require users to scroll through transaction data on a small, black-and-white screen.

The hardware device comes with a 640x480 light sensor camera. This lets users scan transaction QR codes from the NGRAVE LIQUID app. The fingerprint sensor, also found on the device, enables users to confirm transfers via biometrics (in addition to two-stage scanning).

Regarding durability, the manufacturer uses a combination of magnesium, copper, aluminum, and zinc, and the device is water-resistant.

The 1200 mAh battery provides efficiency and long-lasting storage. Although users charge the wallet via a USB-C cable, it carries no connection threats.

NGRAVE ZERO Key Features

Next, in this NGRAVE ZERO review, we delve into the wallet’s key features in more detail.

Air-Gapped Transactions

As a top air-gapped wallet, NGRAVE ZERO eliminates all internet and connection threats, including WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, and USB-C. It’s never exposed to remote risks, even when users broadcast transactions to the blockchain.

The two-stage verification process relies on QR codes. Without scanning those codes from the hardware device and mobile app, funds cannot leave the wallet. The air-gap mechanism will justify the wallet’s luxury price tag for security-first cryptocurrency users.

NGRAVE Perfect Key

Users receive a unique “Perfect Key” when they first set up the hardware device. It's a hexadecimal representation of the private key, so it uses a randomly generated combination of 64 letters and numbers.

NGRAVE designed the Perfect Key system for its GRAPHENE product, which requires users to engrave it on a steel plate.

While GRAPHENE costs an extra $100, the wallet lets users switch to a traditional 24-word seed phrase. This alternative is easier to manage and secure, as users avoid the much longer 64-character combination.

Biometric Fingerprint Scanner

An optional but recommended security add-on, the NGRAVE ZERO wallet has a biometric sensor attached.

It allows users to register their fingerprint ID on the device itself, rather than relying on a smartphone device with internet connectivity risks. The secure element chip protects the registered biometric against tampering.

Once they activate the security feature, users provide their fingerprint to approve transfers.

Custom Operating System

The physical device relies on a custom OS, which the NGRAVE ZERO team built from the ground up.

Since the OS earned EAL7 certification, it boasts the highest security rating available. To achieve EAL7, NGRAVE ZERO passed rigorous auditing to ensure it withstands military-grade cyber attacks. As such, national defense systems use the same certification level.

One drawback to consider is that the custom OS is not open-source. While NGRAVE states it plans to open-source gradually, this will not include the secure element that earned EAL7.

Passphrase and Hidden Wallets

Another optional security feature is custom passphrases. Users may choose their own sequence of one to 512 characters directly on the wallet device. Note that spaces count, and the sequence is case-sensitive.

To recover a lost or stolen wallet, users must provide both the custom passphrase and the Perfect Key or 24-word seed phrase.

Using the passphrase feature also enables hidden wallets. For example, one passphrase could create a hidden wallet for Ethereum meme coins, and another for Bitcoin.

This safeguard secures wallet funds even if somebody gains access to the seed phrase, since they'd also require the passphrase.

Tamper-Proof Design

Our NGRAVE ZERO review evaluated the provider's tamper-proof claims. We found it uses four tamper-protection layers to ensure the wallet cannot be compromised physically.

The design ensures bad actors cannot open the device without damaging it, and the built-in sensors erase the device accordingly. In this event, users may still recover their cryptocurrencies remotely.

NGRAVE LIQUID Companion App

NGRAVE customers use the Liquid companion app to transact. While the app requires an internet connection, users approve transactions with the physical device.

The app is user-friendly, and transfers work like any other mobile wallet. Users may paste the receiving address or scan its QR code. Once the user completes the two-stage authorization, the funds leave the NGRAVE wallet instantly.

NGRAVE LIQUID doesn’t support a built-in WalletConnect feature, so users cannot access dApps without third-party integration. Just two software wallets connect with NGRAVE: MetaMask and Rabby.

The app’s limited features mean NGRAVE ZERO is a better fit for buy-and-hold investors. Those who actively trade cryptocurrencies or use decentralized finance (DeFi) features may find that other hardware wallets offer a more convenient experience.

What is NGRAVE GRAPHENE?

The NGRAVE GRAPHENE is a premium add-on to the NGRAVE ZERO. It allows users to secure their 64-character Perfect Key on stainless steel plates.

Users engrave the backup credentials by punching holes through the upper plate, which leaves unmarked dots on the lower plate. Those dots only align correctly when both plates stack together, so NGRAVE recommends storing them separately.

This complex recovery management process is much safer than writing seed phrases on a sheet of paper. The plates are resistant to fire, corrosion, extreme temperatures, and water.

NGRAVE charges an extra $100 for its GRAPHENE product, which takes the total wallet cost to $498. The price increases to $148 when purchased standalone.

Whether the extra cost is worthwhile depends on the investor’s holdings. Those with significant amounts may value the added peace of mind, knowing that their backup credentials are secure.

NGRAVE ZERO Pricing and Fees

While third-party resellers may offer lower prices, security experts recommend buying hardware wallets directly from the manufacturer. Otherwise, you face the risk of purchasing a compromised device.

All wallet and bundle orders include free global shipping, 30-day returns, and a two-year warranty. Those buying the GRAPHENE individually incur shipping fees based on the delivery country.

If you misplace the GRAPHENE’s upper or lower plate, NGRAVE charges replacement fees of $248 and $28, respectively.

Regarding ongoing charges, our NGRAVE ZERO review confirms that storing cryptocurrencies is fee-free. Users receive digital assets without charge, and they pay the standard network fee for outgoing transfers.

The native app, NGRAVE LIQUID, lets users buy cryptocurrencies with fiat money. Payment methods include debit/credit cards, e-wallets, and banking networks like ACH. Since third-party gateways like Transak and BTC Direct handle fiat services, they set payment fees. Those fees vary widely by the currency, payment method, and purchased asset, and providers build them directly into the final quote.

Although users may access dApps by connecting to MetaMask or Rabby, NGRAVE ZERO has no control over any on-chain fees.

Is NGRAVE ZERO User-Friendly?

Some users may require a slight learning curve, particularly those using air-gapped solutions for the first time. Once you receive the wallet, the setup process takes about 10 minutes.

On the device, users set a PIN and register their fingerprint ID. The device then randomly generates a unique Perfect Key in real-time. Users must secure the Perfect Key on a sheet of paper or, if purchased, the NGRAVE GRAPHENE. As a safety precaution, the hardware wallet requires users to verify the backup credentials. This confirms they've been written down correctly.

The next step is to download the NGRAVE LIQUID app, follow the on-screen security steps, and connect the app with the NGRAVE ZERO.

In terms of transacting, users set up transfers on the mobile app. They input the digital asset, amount, and destination wallet address, and the app generates a QR code. The device’s built-in camera scans the QR code, and if activated, users provide their fingerprint ID. After reviewing the transfer details, users approve the transaction by scanning the QR code on their device from the app.

While the two-step process reduces convenience, it gives crypto investors robust security protection.

The NGRAVE LIQUID app offers limited features compared to other mobile wallets. It allows users to purchase cryptocurrencies via third parties, yet fees are much higher than traditional exchanges.

NGRAVE ZERO Customer Support

The NRAVE website claims to offer "top-notch customer service" alongside a live chat image, yet it offers email support only. This is a notable drawback considering the wallet's premium price. Research shows that most customers receive an email response within 24 hours.

NGRAVE also offers a comprehensive help center that covers common queries. Topics include device setup, security features, coin deposits, and adding custom ERC-20 tokens.
