Blockchain-related subject matters are no stranger to the classroom, with courses now available all over the world, but China is on the verge of an educational first – with a batch of students set to begin their studies at the nation’s first blockchain engineering undergraduate course. So what will be on the curriculum?

The new Chinese academic year begins next week, with students already enrolled in the new Blockchain Engineering major at the Chengdu University of Information Technology.

And, speaking to media outlet China Email, the course organizers stated that the course would begin with the basics, covering the same kind of ground as traditional computer science and technology courses. However, students will also be exposed to blockchain technology theory and blockchain project development methods from the outset.

They will also receive instruction on the intricacies of system design and adoption, as well as blockchain project management. The students will also learn how to conceive, design, implement and operate blockchain-powered systems in real-life application environments. Topics such as distributed storage, peer-to-peer (P2P) networks, encryption algorithms and cryptography, consensus algorithms and smart contracts are also on the syllabus.

By the time the undergrads are ready to complete their courses in 2024, they will be able to design and develop blockchain networks for practical use in a range of scenarios, and manage blockchain-based projects.

Students on the course will be able to choose blockchain specialization modules if they have a particular area of interest.

Modules will also focus on software engineering, cybersecurity, IT and communication engineering, Big Data and AI.

The course was approved by the Chinese Education Ministry last year.

As previously reported, industry insiders say that the education sector is failing to keep up with skyrocketing demand for blockchain talent in China.
