The mayor of Seoul is looking to come good on his election manifesto promises – with an ambitious plan to transform the South Korean capital into a hub of blockchain technology-powered progress.

Mayor Park Won-soon, touted by many as a future presidential candidate, visited Switzerland’s “Crypto Valley” in Zug this week, where he unveiled plans to invest some USD 106 million in city funds on two incubation complexes for a total of 200 blockchain startups – as well as “training colleges,” which will be charged with producing “760 blockchain professionals.”

Per ZDnet Korea, Park says work will begin soon on the new complexes, which should be able to house 73 companies by the end of 2019. Both centers are set to be fully functional by 2021.

The city will also create a USD 88 million blockchain startup support fund in conjunction with the private sector – with Seoul stumping up USD 12 million worth of public funds.

Park has also recently paid a visit to Estonia and Spain, and will return to South Korea on Sunday.

As previously reported on Cryptonews.com, the mayor also pledged to issue a city-wide digital fiat prior to his reelection as mayor earlier this year – although local authorities in Seoul districts such as Nowon seem to have beaten him to the punch. https://cryptonews.com/news/digital-fiat-booming-in-south-korea-2681.htm

The district has issued a pioneering digital fiat, pegged 1:1 with the Korean won, which can be used to pay in local stores – and will eventually be used to issue benefits such as child support.
