The world’s largest smartphone maker, Samsung has unveiled details about three models of a new blockchain-friendly mobile device, developed in association with Ground X, a subsidiary of chat app giant Kakao.

The devices are named Klaytn Phone, and will be powered by Ground X’s Klaytn blockchain platform. The news confirms reports from earlier this week.
The Klaytn Phone is a special limited edition of the recently released Galaxy Note 10 phone-tablet (phablet), with two Klaytn Phone versions of its Galaxy Note 5 Plus version also available: a 256G model and a 512G version. As reported, the main difference from the regular version the device has is that it comes with a cryptocurrency wallet and blockchain apps installed.
Per a dedicated website for the devices, Samsung says the phones come with five Klaytn dapps (decentralized apps) pre-loaded.
The dapps are:
- Digital contents provider Piction Network
- Shopping platform WomansTalk
- Dining dapp Haemuk
- Beauty platform Fitsme
- Mobile video platform Antube.
The devices also have a built-in Klay wallet for Klaytn’s token. Kakao has previously announced that Klay will be listed on exchanges operated by major South Korean exchange Upbit later this month. Klaytn will airdrop 2,000 Klay tokens to customers. However, it’s not clear what is the value of these coins in fiat money.
The phone only appears to be available to South Korean users for the time being, and only compatible with the domestic SK Telecom network. A buy now link navigates to an e-commerce platform operated by Ground X. The the basic model is retailing at USD 1,044.78, 256G is priced at USD 1,169.05 and the 512G costs USD 1,251.94.
Samsung has previously revealed that its blockchain wallet will soon be Klay-compatible.
Meanwhile, the biggest competitor of Samsung, American giant Apple, said recently that they’re “watching cryptocurrency” as “it has interesting long-term potential.”
