CoinMKT altcurrency exchange to launch public beta next week
CoinMKT, a new cyrptocurrency exchange, is launching its public beta on 3rd September.

UPDATE (9th September 18:17 BST): CoinMKT's public beta version is now live.
, a new cryptocurrency exchange, is launching its public beta on 3rd September. Founded by Travis Skweres, the company is aiming to be the first US based exchange that will enable the trading of seven digital currencies. Users will also enjoy commission-free trading for the first month.
"What we really want to do is provide a more seamless experience where the user never has to leave our site, similar to Coinbase. Think: Coinbase’s easy bank linking process, but not just bitcoins … six different cryptocurrencies," Skweres told CoinDesk in June.
An important aspect of CoinMKT is pre-emptive regulatory compliance. When we spoke to Skweres in June he said, "Internally we are calling it ‘pre-compliance’." We enquired with him where the company is at now, in the run up to its public beta. He told us, "We've been working with a company called Coin Comply to get all of our regulatory ducks in order. We are registered with FinCen, have KYC & AML* processes in place, and a roadmap for state licensing compliance. As you know, getting 50 state coverage is a lengthy process, so though we're working on it, we have not yet achieved full coverage."
* KYC = "Know your customer", and AML = "Anti-Money Laundering".
Originally, CoinMKT was known to support six currencies: bitcoin, Litecoin, PPCoin, NovaCoin, TerraCoin, and NameCoin. However, we have received word from the Feathercoin community that its currency will also be included in CoinMKT's offerings. Feathercoin's John Manglaviti reported that at the New York City Bitcoin conference, he'd been shown an early beta version of CoinMKT that included the Scrypt based currency.
Skweres confirmed to us that Feathercoin will be supported, "We will be supporting FTC, we're very excited about it. Right now we accept: BTC, LTC, PPC, TRC, NVC, NMC, FTC. As new coins are created, we have internal controls in place to evaluate the strength of a coin based on its use, its community, development team and so on. We will be refining this process as we go forward to decide which coins to accept, if necessary drop, and so on."
CoinMKT has said it will accept deposits and withdrawals from US customers via Dwolla, but international customers will have to use wire transfers to deposit into their account.
Additionally, verified customers will be able to withdraw up to $50,000 per month. Of course, such numbers draw attention to liquidity. "We have been speaking with investors and the conversations are going well, but we are bootstrapped up until this point, so liquidity and building the order book will be our main focus as we move forward in the short term," Skweres told us.
The exchange could prove popular in the US, given that the only other exchange that allows for trades of fiat funds against bitcoin and altcoins is BTC-e. Many people are avoiding Mt. Gox, which currently only trades in bitcoin, as it has been beset with problems when it comes to the withdrawal of fiat funds.
The other notable altcurrency exchange is BTER, however, this only trades altcurrencies against each other and does not allow for fiat trading.

KuCoin Hits Record Market Share as 2025 Volumes Outpace Crypto Market

KuCoin captured a record share of centralised exchange volume in 2025, with more than $1.25tn traded as its volumes grew faster than the wider crypto market.
What to know:
- KuCoin recorded over $1.25 trillion in total trading volume in 2025, equivalent to an average of roughly $114 billion per month, marking its strongest year on record.
- This performance translated into an all-time high share of centralised exchange volume, as KuCoin’s activity expanded faster than aggregate CEX volumes, which slowed during periods of lower market volatility.
- Spot and derivatives volumes were evenly split, each exceeding $500 billion for the year, signalling broad-based usage rather than reliance on a single product line.
- Altcoins accounted for the majority of trading activity, reinforcing KuCoin’s role as a primary liquidity venue beyond BTC and ETH at a time when majors saw more muted turnover.
- Even as overall crypto volumes softened mid-year, KuCoin maintained elevated baseline activity, indicating structurally higher user engagement rather than short-lived volume spikes.

Bitcoin hash rate slides during U.S. winter storm while markets shrug off mining disruption

The temporary loss of mining power underscores academic concerns that geographic and pool concentration can magnify infrastructure failures, though markets showed little immediate reaction.
What to know:
- Bitcoin’s hashrate fell about 10 percent during a U.S. winter storm, underscoring how local power disruptions can strain the network’s capacity to process transactions.
- Researchers have shown that concentrated mining, as seen in a 2021 regional outage in China, can lead to slower block times, higher fees and broader market disruptions.
- With a few large pools now controlling most of Bitcoin’s hashrate, the network is increasingly vulnerable to localized infrastructure failures, even as the price of BTC remains largely unaffected in the short term.
