London, UK – The swap box has not changed much in five years. You input a token, select an output, hit confirm. What has changed is everything underneath it, and according to @_capfree, founder of BitGorilla, the infrastructure layer is now so far ahead of the interface that the interface has become the bottleneck in on-chain execution.
“Four things shifted at once and the interface never caught up,” he says. “Chains went from a handful to well over a hundred. Most serious aggregators moved to solver auctions. Bitcoin finally arrived in DeFi for real. And MEV stopped being a researcher’s term and became something normal traders can name and route around.”
Together, these shifts have turned a minor inefficiency into a measurable execution problem. Routing differences alone can account for more than 1% variance on a single swap, depending on auction depth and mempool exposure.
The hidden architecture of a swap
When a user hits confirm on a cross-chain swap, the transaction enters an infrastructure layer most have never seen. In the best cases, it enters a competitive solver auction where professional market makers bid to fill the order, with the user receiving the best available price from whoever competed hardest.
In the worst cases, it hits a public mempool unprotected, gets sandwiched by a bot extracting value from both sides, and settles for a fill that looks normal but is measurably worse. The difference is not visible in any standard interface. It shows up only as a gap between the price expected and the price received, which most users attribute to slippage and move on.
The token coverage problem
A second structural issue sits upstream of execution quality: most platforms do not support the full range of assets and chains their users want to trade.
“Users feel the limitation before they ever understand it,” @_capfree explains. “Open the app, search for the asset, hit a ‘not supported on this route’ banner, close the app, try somewhere else. Do that two or three times and the user writes off the whole category as broken, when really each platform is just operating inside its own narrow box.”
Moving value from Bitcoin to a stablecoin on an L2 can still require multiple hops, wrappers, and trust layers, each carrying its own spread and trust assumption. Every hop adds cost and risk. None of it is visible as distinct fees.
“Collapse that into a single cross-chain intent and the spreads stop stacking,” says @_capfree. “The wrappers stop compounding custodian risk, and the dead-end ‘route not supported’ errors go away. This isn’t a new feature. It’s three workarounds the user was silently paying for, removed.”
Builders are inheriting broken plumbing
The infrastructure problem runs upstream into every product built on top of DeFi execution. Every wallet, treasury tool, and DAO dashboard that wants to offer a swap either writes its own routing logic or picks a vendor and inherits that vendor’s constraints. EVM only. Wrapped Bitcoin only. One solver pipeline dressed up as a competitive auction.
“When routing becomes a shared utility, builders call one API and get best execution across every chain and asset class as a default. A fintech that used to need a team to ship a swap feature now needs an API key. Execution becomes a property of the network, not the app.”

Autonomous trading agents and rebalancing bots now represent a growing share of on-chain volume. These systems have no preference for design. They have requirements: quote reliability, settlement consistency, cross-chain coverage, and predictable execution quality at scale. Platforms built around interface experience are structurally ill-suited to serve them.
