Aptos is a Layer 1 Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchain designed to deliver high transaction speeds and improved security using the Move programming language. Initially developed by engineers from Meta’s Diem blockchain project, Aptos aims to drive the adoption of web3 by providing a scalable infrastructure for decentralized applications (DApps). Its parallel execution engine seeks to process over 150,000 transactions per second (TPS), enhancing efficiency and reducing network congestion. The native token, APT, is used for transaction fees, staking, and governance.

Aptos utilizes a Byzantine Fault-Tolerant (BFT) PoS consensus mechanism, combined with its Block-STM execution engine, to process transactions in parallel rather than sequentially. This approach seeks to maximize throughput and minimize latency. Transactions are validated post-execution, with failed transactions being re-executed or discarded based on software transactional memory rules. The blockchain is built on Move, a language designed to enhance security and performance compared to Ethereum’s Solidity, enabling more efficient and reliable smart contracts.

Aptos supports a broad range of decentralized applications, including DeFi, NFTs, and enterprise blockchain solutions. Its high-speed transaction processing makes it suitable for applications requiring fast finality, such as gaming, automated trading, and payments. Move’s smart contract capabilities allow developers to build secure applications with enhanced programmability. Additionally, Aptos’ modular architecture enables seamless upgrades and customization, allowing the network to evolve with emerging web3 innovations.

Aptos was co-founded by Mo Shaikh and Avery Ching, former Meta engineers involved in the Diem blockchain project. After Diem was discontinued in 2022, they established Aptos Labs to continue developing a scalable blockchain infrastructure. The project secured funding from venture capital firms, including Andreessen Horowitz, FTX Ventures, and Jump Crypto, reaching a valuation of $4 billion. Aptos launched its mainnet later in 2022, introducing its high-performance Layer 1 blockchain to the web3 ecosystem.
