By using cryptocurrencies, especially stablecoins, aid organizations can deliver funds directly to recipients faster, more securely, and with greater accountability, while also respecting the privacy and dignity of vulnerable populations.

How It Works 

Crypto-based aid distribution typically involves transferring funds, often in the form of stablecoins like USDC, directly to recipients via digital wallets. These wallets can be accessed on smartphones, and funds can be spent, converted, or held as needed. Organizations can preload wallets, issue QR codes for claims, or partner with local vendors to accept crypto for goods and services.

Onchain transparency allows donors and organizations to trace where funds go in real-time, while privacy-preserving tools like zero-knowledge proofs or pseudonymous wallet addresses protect recipient identities. Smart contracts can automate disbursements, reduce human error, and ensure aid reaches those who qualify based on clear criteria.

  • Cost savings: Traditional aid systems often rely on multiple intermediaries—banks, governments, NGOs—each taking a cut or adding administrative costs. Crypto removes many of these layers, reducing fees and operational overhead. This means more funds go directly to people who need them.

Stablecoins pegged to the U.S. dollar protect recipients from inflation, ensuring the aid retains its value when it's most needed. In Venezuela, USDC stablecoins were used to distribute relief funds directly to medical workers, bypassing the state-controlled banking system and allowing recipients to spend in U.S. dollars.  

  • Security: Blockchain-based distribution gives recipients more control over their aid. Funds can't be easily seized, stolen, or manipulated by bad actors. Smart contract systems also help prevent duplicate claims or fraud.

  • Privacy: Traditional systems often require recipients to provide extensive personal information, risking exposure and discrimination. Crypto tools allow for aid distribution without collecting sensitive data, using pseudonymous wallets or decentralized ID systems to protect identities.

  • Financial inclusion: Receiving aid in the form of crypto can be the first step toward financial empowerment. With a digital wallet in hand, recipients can access broader financial tools like saving, transferring, or earning income online, opening paths to long-term resilience.
