{"id":99682,"date":"2019-03-21T03:50:08","date_gmt":"2019-03-21T10:50:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=99682"},"modified":"2026-04-28T19:05:56","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T18:05:56","slug":"cardanos-1-5-mainnet-release-successful-progress-towards-new-proof-of-stake-protocol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cardanos-1-5-mainnet-release-successful-progress-towards-new-proof-of-stake-protocol\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardano&#8217;s 1.5 Mainnet Release Successful, Progress Towards New Proof-of-Stake Protocol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/cardano\/\">Cardano<\/a> has successfully <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.cardano.org\/t\/cardano-1-5-mainnet-daedalus-0-13-0-with-cardano-sl-3-0-0\/21455\">deployed<\/a> its 1.5 mainnet, bringing the protocol a step closer to proof-of-stake consensus that \u201cmatches the security guarantees of proof-of-work <a href=\"\/blockchain\/bitcoin\/\">protocols such as Bitcoin<\/a>.\u201d The update also includes a number of other optimizations, primarily around the blockchain\u2019s crypto wallet, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/products\/daedalus\/\">Daedelus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Mar. 21st, Cardano deployed its 1.5 mainnet. The release is the <a href=\"https:\/\/cardanoroadmap.com\/\">final stage<\/a> of the project\u2019s \u201cByron\u201d phase of development, which includes optimized block storage, tools for programming language Rust, Daedalus for Linux, a Cardano testnet, and other features.<\/p>\n<p>Technically, the release will fork Cardano. However, because the release is uncontentious it is unlikely to split the community or create a separate cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>Cardano (ADA) is currently ranked 11th with a market capitalization of $1.4 billion.\u00a0 Prior to the announcement, ADA was trading at 0.0518 per coin. Three hours after the announcement, ADA was trading at 0.0537, a 3.7 percent increase.<\/p>\n<h2>Progress Towards Proof-of-Stake<\/h2>\n<p>The 1.5 release also includes progress towards the project\u2019s move to a new proof-of-stake consensus protocol. Currently, the project is using \u201cOuroboros Classic,\u201d which uses a more limited number of nodes among other deficiencies. With 1.5, the project is transitioning to \u201cOuroboros BFT (Byzantine fault tolerance),\u201d which is an intermediary for the projects final consensus algorithm, \u201cOuroboros Genesis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to materials from <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/iohk\/\">IOHK<\/a>, Ouroboros BFT is a common technical \u201cmeeting point\u201d for the two protocols in order to ensure a \u201csmooth handoff.\u201d Allegedly, the update is \u201cmajor\u201d because it represents the \u201cfirst proof-of-stake protocol that matches the security guarantees of proof-of-work protocols such as Bitcoin.\u201d The update will not be active immediately with 1.5 and will be announced separately, according to the release.<\/p>\n<h2>Other Improvements<\/h2>\n<p>The 1.5 release also includes a host of other fixes and performance improvements, primarily revolving around Daedelus, Cardano\u2019s primary crypto wallet.<\/p>\n<p>Following 1.5, IOHK plans to release a line up of heavy-hitting features in its <a href=\"https:\/\/cardanoroadmap.com\/\">Shelley<\/a> development cycle, including <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/products\/trezor-model-t\/\">Trezor<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/products\/ledger-blue\/\">Ledger Nano S<\/a> support, full multi-signature support, side-chain support, NFC (touchless) debit cards, and other improvements.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that Cardano has continued to deliver on its development promises for Q1, consistent with the project\u2019s development-first-hype-later approach towards management.
