Following the announcement, the price per lumen rose 7.3 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Stellar Lumens (XLM) is an open-source cryptocurrency, similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/xrp\/\">XRP<\/a>, that aims to facilitate remittances by creating a platform that connects banks and payment systems to move money &#8220;quickly, reliably, and at almost no cost.&#8221; The system was created by the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/mt-gox\/\">Mt. Gox<\/a> and co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/ripple\/\">Ripple<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/jed-mccaleb\/\">Jed McCaleb<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>World Wire was initially <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ibm-launches-blockchain-payments-powered-by-stellar\/\">announced<\/a> by IBM in October of 2017. The network now boasts 44 \u201cbanking endpoints for optimizing the exchange of 47 currencies in 72 countries, according to an IBM press release on Mar. 18th. Allegedly, the network is the first of its kind to use a \u201csingle unified network for all components of a foreign exchange transaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IBM?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IBM<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Blockchain?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Blockchain<\/a> World Wire has enabled payment locations in 72 countries, with 47 currencies and 44 banking endpoints. Within six hours the price peaked at 0.118 from 0.110 per lumen, an increase of 7.3 percent. At time of writing, price per lumen decreased from its peak to 0.112 a coin, still 1.8 percent above pre-announcement levels. The announcement comes on the heels of XLM's <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/stellar-lumens-xlm-listing-on-coinbase-pro\/\">recent listing<\/a> on Coinbase Pro.<\/p>\n<h2>Details on World Wire<\/h2>\n<p>Rather than using conventional correspondent banks, the network uses Stellar to conduct point-to-point money transfers. Users can also choose from a variety of other digital assets, including the stablecoin <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/stronghold-usd\/\">Stronghold USD<\/a> to minimize price fluctuations during transit. According to the company, the system is able to transmit funds at a \u201cfraction of the cost and time of traditional means.\u201d Marie Wieck, general manager at IBM Blockchain elaborated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We've created a new type of payment network designed to accelerate remittances and transform cross-border payments to facilitate the movement of money in countries that need it most. By creating a network where financial institutions support multiple digital assets, we expect to spur innovation and improve financial inclusion worldwide.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So far, the network has also garnered notable institutional interest. Six international banks, including Banco Bradesco, Bank Busan, and Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC) have signed letters of intent to issue their own stablecoins on World Wire. Once approved, this will add the Euro, Indonesian Rupiah, Philippine Peso, Korean Won and Brazilian Real stablecoins to the World Wire network. One banker, Manny T. Narcisco, first senior vice-president at RCBC stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We're focused on innovation that adds value for our customers, and World Wire presents a tremendous opportunity to transform and enhance our payment infrastructure.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In aggregate, financial institutions conduct over $500 billion in remittance and international money transfers a year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewglobal.org\/interactives\/remittance-map\/\">according to<\/a> figures from the World Bank.
