Controversy has been brewing since the exchange's acquisition of blockchain analytics company Neutrino on Feb. 19th. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jespow\/status\/1102346122138333184\">Purportedly<\/a>, the founder of Neutrino is also the founder of spyware development firm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hackingteam.it\/\"><em>Hacking Team<\/em><\/a>, a company which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-03-05\/coinbase-cuts-ties-with-hacking-team-following-spyware-backlash\">criticized<\/a> for selling its surveillance technology to authoritarian regimes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update March 11<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GBSavant\/status\/1105073593736749058\">:<\/a> On <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GBSavant\/status\/1105073593736749058\">Twitter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/grant-blaisdell\/\">Grant Blaisdell<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/coinfirm\/\">Coinfirm<\/a>, a company mentioned in this article, denies that Coinfirm ever had any formal involvement with Coinbase. The mention of Coinfirm has been removed.<\/p>\n<h2>Coinbase Lambasted for Hiring Alleged Spyware Developers<\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Coinbase says it accidentally hired a group of mercenaries, who sold cyberweapons to Saudi Arabia and Sudan, and is now firing them <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/EaWbOHmWS3\">https:\/\/t.co\/EaWbOHmWS3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Mark Milian (@markmilian) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/markmilian\/status\/1103084084962635776?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 6, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Once Coinbase made its acquisition of Neutrino, a number of different publications <a href=\"https:\/\/breakermag.com\/coinbases-newest-team-members-helped-authoritarians-worldwide-monitor-journalists-and-dissidents\/\">lambasted<\/a> the company for associating itself with the ethically questionable employees. The publicity storm intensified into the Twitter campaign #DeleteCoinbase, with users calling for a boycott of the service.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jespow\/status\/1102346122138333184\">According<\/a> to Jesse Powell, CEO of competing cryptocurrency exchange <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/kraken\">Kraken<\/a>, the exchange\u2019s compliance team conducted an analysis of Neutrino and listed one concern about the company as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Known to pass information with Kaspersky Lab, GroupIB, and other Russian firms closely linked with FSB [Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation].&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/nzeg5x\/here-are-all-the-sketchy-government-agencies-buying-hacking-teams-spy-tech\">report<\/a> from Motherboard, Hacking Team sold spyware to countries including Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Kazakhstan, as well as the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Drug Enforcement Administration.<\/p>\n<h2>Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Responds to Accusations<\/h2>\n<p>In response to the controversy, CEO Brian Armstrong announced that Coinbase would <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-lays-off-neutrino-employees-who-worked-for-hacking-team\/\">\u2018transition\u2019 former members of Hacking Team<\/a> from recently acquired Neutrino. <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.coinbase.com\/living-up-to-our-values-and-the-neutrino-acquisition-ba98174cdcf6\">According<\/a> to Armstrong:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe had a gap in our diligence process. While we looked hard at the technology and security of the Neutrino product, we did not properly evaluate everything from the perspective of our mission and values as a crypto company. We took some time to dig further into this over the past week, and together with the Neutrino team have come to an agreement: those who previously worked at Hacking Team (despite the fact that they have no current affiliation with Hacking Team), will transition out of Coinbase.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In response, the announcement seemed to have curtailed some of the criticism from the community. Joseph Young, a renowned cryptocurrency analyst and investor gave credit to Coinbase for rectifying the situation:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Coinbase let go of The Hacking Team leaders. The company made a mistake, owned up to it, and fixed it. Kudos.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Joseph Young (@iamjosephyoung) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iamjosephyoung\/status\/1102760843890974722?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 5, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Anthony Pompliano, co-founder of Morgan Creek Digital and recognized Bitcoin supporter, also suggested that the company was responding effectively to the allegations:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Say what you want about Coinbase, but the people spoke and the company listened.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Pomp ? (@APompliano) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/APompliano\/status\/1102761616679026688?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 5, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Yet, it seems that the accusations have also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WhalePanda\/status\/1102818756605239296\">inflamed<\/a> concerns around Coinbase \u201cselling user data\u201d to associated firms.<\/p>\n<h2>Does Coinbase Sell Client Data?<\/h2>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/cheddar.com\/media\/coinbase-adds-support-for-ripple-s-xrp-despite-regulatory-uncertainty\">interview<\/a> with Cheddar\u2014when asked why Coinbase acquired Neutrino, Christine Sandler, the director of institutional sales at Coinbase\u2014stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt was important for us to migrate away from our current providers\u2026 They were selling client data to outside sources and it was compelling for us to get control over that and have proprietary technology that we could leverage to keep the data safe and protect our clients.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yet, Sandler\u2019s statements also suggest that Coinbase\u2019s current blockchain intelligence providers were, or are currently, selling Coinbase user data. Now, by association, Coinbase\u2019s partner intelligence companies, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.elliptic.co\/\">Elliptic<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blockchaingroup.io\/\">Blockchain Intelligence Group<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ciphertrace.com\/\">Ciphertrace<\/a> are now under scrutiny from the cryptocurrency community. Given that crypto users are far more security conscious than the average person these concerns are not trivial.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If you use Coinbase, now you are not only paying for your own surveillance but the salary of a person who contributed to the murder of journalists, targeting of minority populations, and spouse-ware around the world. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fcjoTij8l9\">https:\/\/t.co\/fcjoTij8l9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Janine (@J9Roem) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/J9Roem\/status\/1098179430780977153?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 20, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Coinbase\u2019s privacy policy from May 25th, 2018, explicitly states:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe may share your information with service providers under contract who help with parts of our business operations such as bill collection, marketing, and technology services. Our contracts require these service providers to only use your information in connection with the services they perform for us, and prohibit them from selling your information to anyone else.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>More emphatically, the privacy policy says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe take care to allow your personal information to be accessed only by those who really need to in order to perform their tasks and duties, and to share with third parties who have a legitimate purpose for accessing it. [Coinbase] <strong>CB will never sell or rent your personal information.<\/strong> [emphasis in original]\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As such, if Sandler\u2019s statements are correct then Coinbase was in violation of its own privacy policy.\u00a0For additional clarification on the extent and parties involved with the potential sale of client data, CryptoSlate reached out to Coinbase and CEO Brian Armstrong and has yet to receive a response.<\/p>\n<h2>Partner Firm Responds to Rumors<\/h2>\n<p>Elliptic, one of the firms responsible for aiding with KYC-compliance through its service and identifying &#8220;illicit activity in Bitcoin&#8230; [by] providing actionable intelligence,&#8221; posted a response after getting swept up in the negative publicity. Elliptic co-founder and CEO Dr. James Smith <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elliptic.co\/our-thinking\/elliptic-financial-privacy\">wrote<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI have been disappointed to see reporting in the past few days which has incorrectly implied that Elliptic is distributing personal information for financial gain. Such comments fundamentally misunderstand the data we analyse, the insight we share with our clients, and the role we play in the industry.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The CEO went on to assert that Elliptic does not have access to \u201cend users\u2019 personally identifiable information\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c[We have] no access to end users\u2019 personally identifiable information.
