So far, there have been six confirmed cases of the breach. The company identified the source of the problem as a \u201cfeature powered by third-party software.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the latest crypto hack, peer-to-peer trading service LocalBitcoins was breached on Jan. 26th at approximately 10:00 UTC, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/localbitcoins\/comments\/ak1u8m\/localbitcoins_report_on_the_security\/\">statement<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LocalBitcoins\/status\/1089186250689515520\">from the company<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>LocalBitcoins is a peer-to-peer trading service that facilitates <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\">bitcoin<\/a> trading without the use of a structured bid\/ask order book. Buyers and sellers typically complete trades via bank wire and escrow, with some trades even happening in person.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other exchange services, cryptocurrency doesn\u2019t need to be held on the platform for buyers. However, sellers may need to use LocalBitcoin\u2019s internal wallet system for the platform\u2019s escrow services. CryptoSlate reached out to LocalBitcoins for more clarity around the breach and has yet to receive a response.<\/p>\n<p>According to the company\u2019s statement, outgoing transactions were disabled, but have since been re-enabled. Furthermore, the company also disabled the LocalBitcoin forums for \u201csecurity reasons\u201d until further notice.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the public statement, the company claims:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe have taken a number of measures to address this issue and secure the limited number of accounts that might have been at risk.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As with many online services, LocalBitcoins recommends users enable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/feature\/358289\/two-factor-authentication-who-has-it-and-how-to-set-it-up\">two-factor authentication<\/a> to prevent unauthorized account access in the case of a future breach.<\/p>\n<p>Security in the cryptocurrency sphere has been an ongoing problem. Third-party services are prone to hacks (and some even speculate that some of these hacks are &#8220;insider jobs&#8221;).
