Yet, there is evidence that this is likely recycled news from over six months ago.<\/p>\n<p>On darknet market <em>Dread<\/em>, a vendor going by <em>ExploitDOT<\/em> was reported to have been selling KYC data from exchanges in a sub-community (\/d\/DNMAds). The post suggested that the data came from larger exchanges such as <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/bittrex\">Bittrex<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/poloniex\">Poloniex<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/bitfinex\">Bitfinex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The reports are based on a post by ExploitDOT claiming they have \u201c100k documents\u201d containing sensitive user data. The seller was offering 100 such documents for $10 with discounts for larger purchases:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-96987\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/kyc-exchange-hack.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"943\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/kyc-exchange-hack.png 1600w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/kyc-exchange-hack-300x177.png 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/kyc-exchange-hack-768x453.png 768w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/kyc-exchange-hack-1024x604.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The crux of the issue, however, is that the post is over six months old. Although the claims appear to insinuate that some of the largest exchanges were hacked, none have confirmed a data breach. Although that doesn't mean there wasn't a breach, if all three exchanges deny these allegations it's more likely that such a breach never occurred. One of the exchanges to deny these allegations was Bitfinex:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We want to assure our customers that Bitfinex is aware of this situation and can confirm there is no security breach to our platform. As always, if there are any queries please get in touch with our support team &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YslE5GtSGT\">https:\/\/t.co\/YslE5GtSGT<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VeW08TqgWn\">https:\/\/t.co\/VeW08TqgWn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Bitfinex (@bitfinex) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bitfinex\/status\/1087320064125255683?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 21, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In the crypto-media, CCN claimed that they were provided \u201cthree free samples\u201d of the data shown, yet the authenticity and the origins of the data, as CNN mentioned, are debatable. Not only that, there is a real possibility that it is the same leaked data from six months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Mainstream media, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2019\/jan\/17\/breached-data-largest-collection-ever-seen-email-password-hacking?CMP=fb_a-technology_b-gdntech\">Guardian<\/a>, reported last week that \u201cLargest collection ever of breached data found\u201d detailing an 87 GB data dump of stolen data that had been labeled \u201c<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.troyhunt.com\/the-773-million-record-collection-1-data-reach\/\">Collection #1<\/a><\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sanixer, the Telegram username of the person offering this data, <a href=\"https:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2019\/01\/773m-password-megabreach-is-years-old\/\">told KrebsonSecurity<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;Collection #1&#8221; consists of data pulled from a huge number of hacked site, and was not exactly the hacker's \u201cfreshest\u201d offering, and that the data was two to three years old.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Holden, CTO of <a href=\"https:\/\/holdsecurity.com\/\">Hold Security<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2019\/01\/773m-password-megabreach-is-years-old\/\">explained<\/a> that the black market sale of huge amounts of data is <a href=\"https:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2019\/01\/773m-password-megabreach-is-years-old\/\">nothing new<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt was popularized several years ago by Russian hackers on various Dark Web forums. Because the data is gathered from a number of breaches, typically older data, it does not present a direct danger to the general user community. Its sheer volume is impressive, yet, by account of many hackers the data is not greatly useful.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Overall, the alleged KYC hack and re-emergence of the information might not be relevant, especially if users aren't affected.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/CryptoCurrency\/comments\/ai0k8y\/hacked_kyc_data_collected_from_top_exchanges_for\/\">Some in the community have\u00a0labeled<\/a> the news FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt).
