The announcement comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dmarcus\/\">David Marcus<\/a>\u2014former head of Messenger, and the previous president of PayPal\u2014was selected to become &#8216;Director of Engineering, Blockchain.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Facebook is continuing its plan of \u201cstudying the positive and negative aspects\u201d of blockchain technology. As described by David Marcus in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/05\/09\/zuckerberg-invests-in-blockchain-to-keep-facebook-relevant.html\">interview<\/a> with CNBC:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c&#8230;setting up a small group to explore how to best leverage blockchain across Facebook, starting from scratch.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After appointing David Marcus as the lead for the initiative, the company has recently listed four new blockchain engineering positions to fill out the team:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-94799\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2018-12-11-09_57_03-Facebook-Careers.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"402\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2018-12-11-09_57_03-Facebook-Careers.png 728w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2018-12-11-09_57_03-Facebook-Careers-286x300.png 286w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The entrance by the company shouldn\u2019t come as a surprise. A lot of us got into technology because we believe it can be a decentralizing force that puts more power in people's hands.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>An interesting take, considering that Facebook is an enormous silo of centralized information with market dominance over the social media industry. He then goes on to talk about how centralization, surveillance, and control has taken this power away from people:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWith the rise of a small number of big tech companies\u2014and governments using technology to watch their citizens\u2014many people now believe technology only centralizes power rather than decentralizes it\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Another loaded comment. Facebook has been battling over the intersection of data privacy and monetization for years. Finally, Zuckerberg highlights how certain technologies, such as encryption and cryptocurrency, can take that power back from centralized systems:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThere are important counter-trends to this\u2014like encryption and cryptocurrency\u2014that take power from centralized systems and put it back into people's hands.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These statements allude to Facebook\u2019s consideration of blockchain and cryptocurrency since the beginning of this year, at least from the CEO\u2019s perspective. It\u2019s uncertain how long the company has been \u201c&#8230;studying the positive and negative aspects of these technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It seems Facebook is taking the new proposition seriously. In July, TechCrunch <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2018\/05\/08\/messengers-chief-is-leaving-his-role-to-explore-blockchain-for-facebook\/\">reported<\/a> that David Marcus was leading the charge. Now, the company is putting the rest of its high-caliber team together to explore potential use cases.<\/p>\n<p>One thing tempering that sentiment is Facebook\u2019s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/19\/technology\/facebook-cambridge-analytica-explained.html\">data scandals<\/a>. Facebook has attempted to both respect data privacy and sovereignty, while also trying to maintain a profitable bottom line. Putting \u201cpower back in the hands of the people\u201d sounds good on paper, but would mean that Facebook may have to sacrifice control and profitability.<\/p>\n<p>And, even in the midst of the crypto market downturn, Facebook appears to be willing to make investments into developing blockchain tech. As a company, Facebook\u2019s bankroll could lead to innovation in the segment, exemplified by Facebook\u2019s purchase of Oculus for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/briansolomon\/2014\/03\/25\/facebook-buys-oculus-virtual-reality-gaming-startup-for-2-billion\/#226d45eb2498\">minuscule $2 billion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook is not the only Fortune 500 tech company looking to stake a claim in blockchain development. <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/partners\/blockchain\/\">Amazon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/solutions\/blockchain\/\">Microsoft<\/a> have both developed blockchain products in Q1 and Q2 of 2018. Perhaps these established tech giants can smooth out the useability issues and bring blockchain to the masses.
