All of that power resulted in a crypto mining industry, particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a>, popping up \u201calmost overnight,\u201d according to the Guardian. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">An article published Monday noted that some are profiting from the country\u2019s increase in crypto mining, renting out their rigs for cash or raking it in themselves, but others think that power could be better used elsewhere. The article states: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c\u2026many argue Paraguay could better use its abundant hydroelectric energy to help\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lta.reuters.com\/article\/domesticNews\/idLTAKBN1GX2AW-OUSLD\"><span class=\"s2\">the quarter of the population<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that currently live in poverty. According to World Bank figures, Paraguay has the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/documents.worldbank.org\/curated\/en\/751071525763871071\/Paraguay-Notas-de-pol%C3%ADtica-2018\"><span class=\"s2\">highest level of inequality<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in land ownership in the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But with people already profiting from the South American country\u2019s crypto boom, whether that will happen, and how, remains to be seen. Businessman Gregorio Bareiro told the Guardian that some have already made millions from crypto mining. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Bareiro has a fledgling rental business, loaning out computers to miners, alongside his air conditioning shop. He first encountered crypto mining when he started building ad hoc cooling units for mining rigs. His mining rental business employee a dozen people, and rents out 750 machines. He told the Guardian he has plans to expand. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since Paraguay\u2019s power grid isn\u2019t equipped to handle the Itap\u00fa\u2019s massive output, they sell the excess to Brazil, which keeps energy prices incredibly cheap: around five cents per kilowatt-hour, according to the Guardian. This has led external companies like AWS Mining, who build mining farms in countries with cheap and plentiful energy, to <a href=\"https:\/\/paraguaymining.com\/#\/video-details\"><span class=\"s2\">set up shop<\/span><\/a> in Paraguay. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Bareiro thinks that the crypto boom can be the answer to Paraguay\u2019s poverty woes, stating in an interview that \u201cin 10 years, [mining] would generate enough money to pay Paraguay\u2019s external debt\u201d and saying he hopes more crypto-based businesses come to Paraguay.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Investing In Infrastructure, Instead?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">People in the crypto business like Bareiro want to take the excess energy produced by the dam and channel it into more mining efforts, but others think the extra power would be better invested in Paraguay\u2019s manufacturing facilities. This group of politicians, business owners, and academics say it would be more beneficial to seize control of the negotiations over Itap\u00fa\u2019s power in 2023 to make that happen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The group believes doing so could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lanacion.com.py\/negocios\/2018\/01\/05\/utilizacion-de-energia-excedente-podria-generar-2000000-de-puestos-de-trabajo-segun-experto\/\"><span class=\"s2\">generate two million jobs<\/span><\/a> and boost Paraguay\u2019s GDP by four times the current amount. Hosting clean energy data hubs for tech giants like Google could bring in more money for hospitals and infrastructure as well, according to development expert Miguel Carter. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As it stands, the crypto mining boom in Paraguay doesn\u2019t appear to be slowing down. Since around January of 2018, small crypto-related businesses and mining farms have been cropping up to take advantage of the country\u2019s cheap energy bounty.
