Balance confirmation at 2018-10-31 attached.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Tether (@Tether_to) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tether_to\/status\/1058017089133404160?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 1, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tether.to\/tether-banking-relationship-announced\/\">According<\/a> to Tether, Deltec Bank concluded after a months-long \u201cdue diligence review\u201d that the company behind the contentious USDT would be a suitable candidate to open a bank account at their Nassau-based financial institution.<\/p>\n<p>The 72-year-old bank would step into Tether\u2019s confusion of dissolved relationships and financial quandaries; arguably first manifesting when the stablecoin operator in January cut ties with audit firm Friedman LLP\u2014who would have been the first to officially verify Tether\u2019s solvency\u2014and crescendoing again in April when <a href=\"https:\/\/tether.to\/announcement\/\">banking issues<\/a> prevented international customers from redeeming USDT for fiat.<\/p>\n<p>Tether, however, assured that it had this time passed Deltec\u2019s assessment with flying colors, and crucially, that the bank was satisfied the company could cough up the dough for USDT-USD redemption \u201cat any moment\u201d. Their <a href=\"https:\/\/tether.to\/tether-banking-relationship-announced\/\">announcement<\/a>, Nov. 1, stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This included, notably, an analysis of our compliance processes, policies and procedures; a full background check of the shareholders, ultimate beneficiaries and officers of our company; and assessments of our ability to maintain the USD-peg at any moment and our treasury management policies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Rough Waters<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_90758\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90758\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-90758 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/tether-destroys-500million-usdt-coin-social-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"Tether Destroys 500 Million of Its USDT Coin\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-90758\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Related Story:\u00a0<a title=\"Tether Destroys 500 Million of Its USDT Coin\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-destroys-500-million-of-its-usdt-coin\/\">Tether Destroys 500 Million of Its USDT Coin<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The move comes on the tail-end of what may be Tether\u2019s most turbulent month yet, characterized by immense <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/is-tether-quietly-exiting-the-market\/\">deliberation<\/a> over the coin\u2019s welfare after a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-destroys-500-million-of-its-usdt-coin\/\">$500 million USDT \u2018burn\u2019<\/a> saw the stablecoin shed more than $1 billion of market capitalization and flutter below its supposedly guaranteed $1 peg.<\/p>\n<p>Ending the month with a bang, Tether held up a new <a href=\"https:\/\/tether.to\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Tether-Letter.pdf\">letter<\/a> purportedly supplied by Deltec\u2014one that would thinkably satiate some of the crypto community\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-audit-fss-report-states-all-usdt-is-fully-backed-but-cant-prove-it\/\">deep-seated desires for an audit.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As of the close of business on Tuesday, the new account of the Hong Kong-registered stablecoin issuer apparently held $1,831,322,828 in unspecified assets\u2014a valuation that would exceed USDT\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/currencies\/tether\/\">$1,754,909,000<\/a> market capitalization at the time by about $76 million.<\/p>\n<p>Some might seem keen to let the company off the hook just yet, however.<\/p>\n<p>Where the letter may have soothed concerns, it seems to have equally supplied fresh ammunition to Tether skeptics\u2014who promptly met the news with a barrage of pointed tweets, centered around the mercurial description of Tether's &#8220;portfolio&#8221; without naming its contents, as well as the credibility of Bahamas-based Deltec itself.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">What is in the &#39;portfolio&#39; and how was it valued?
