According to Computer Business Review, the company already has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sony.net\/SonyInfo\/News\/Press\/201708\/17-071E\/index.html\"><span class=\"s2\">similar system<\/span><\/a> in place specifically for authenticating, sharing, and rights management of educational data. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_81757\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81757\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-81757\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/rchain-demonstrates-scalable-blockchain-social-1-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"RChain Demonstrates Scalable Blockchain With Audio-On-Chain\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-81757\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Related:\u00a0<a title=\"RChain Demonstrates Scalable Blockchain With Audio-On-Chain\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/rchain-demonstrates-scalable-blockchain-with-audio-on-chain\/\">RChain Demonstrates Scalable Blockchain With Audio-On-Chain<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That system was announced last year and is built on <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/ibm-blockchain\/\">IBM\u2019s blockchain<\/a>, according to the company\u2019s official release. It uses IBM\u2019s cloud computing service and blockchain network <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/hyperledger\/\">Hyperledger<\/a> Fabric 1. No technical details for its rights management system were revealed in Sony\u2019s Monday release, but it may be built in a similar fashion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sony claims its system fills a void in the realm of rights management where many people are creating and releasing creative content themselves online, but the rights to that content are still managed in an outdated way, stating: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cToday, advances in technologies for digital content creation allow anyone to broadcast and share content, but the rights management of that content is still carried out conventionally by industry organizations or the creators themselves, necessitating a more efficient way of managing and demonstrating ownership of copyright-related information for written works.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The new system will include features that record the date and time and electronic data gets created in a \u201cdifficult to falsify way,\u201d as well as automatically verify the rights generated by a piece of written work on boot-up. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Changing World of Digital Rights Management<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sony made $870 million in profit on music sales alone in the past financial year and recently changed its approach for paying royalties, reportedly compensating partner labels and artists from its Spotify shareholding this past summer. This new rights management system appears to be a mother bid by Sony to stay ahead of an entertainment landscape constantly changing in the wake of increased online access and individual capability. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Near the close of the release, Sony said it was considering commercializing its blockchain system for the management of educational data, saying of the system:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis newly developed system can be utilized to manage educational materials and other forms of content used in the field of education, and Sony Global Education is considering its possible commercialization as a service.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The company also mentioned expanding into Virtual Reality and audiobooks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Other companies are exploring\u00a0decentralized ways to pay musicians for their work, removing the middlemen of big names like Apple and Google to allow more of the profits to reach artists.
