{"id":88850,"date":"2018-10-13T04:00:51","date_gmt":"2018-10-13T11:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=88850"},"modified":"2026-04-17T06:54:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T05:54:07","slug":"gemini-announces-litecoin-availability-with-ny-state-approval","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/gemini-announces-litecoin-availability-with-ny-state-approval\/","title":{"rendered":"Gemini Announces Litecoin Availability With NY State Approval"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/gemini\/\">Gemini<\/a> VP of Engineering Erin Winer announced today <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/gemini\/litecoin-is-now-available-on-gemini-467d7d1079e6\"><span class=\"s2\">via the company blog<\/span><\/a> that Gemini will now support <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/litecoin\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Litecoin (LTC)<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Trading Starts Next Week, Deposits Available Now<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On Oct. 13 at 9:30 a.m. EST, users of the Gemini exchange will be able to deposit LTC into their accounts, and trading will begin the following Tuesday, October 16th. As of now the platform trades in three other cryptocurrencies: <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">Ether<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/zcash\/\">Zcash<\/a>. Gemini customers will be able to trade LTC for USD as well as the other three supported cryptocurrencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We are pleased to announce that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/litecoin?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@litecoin<\/a> (LTC) is now available on Gemini! For more information, please visit our blog on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Medium?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Medium<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/it5xuF9Hr5\">https:\/\/t.co\/it5xuF9Hr5<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Gemini (@Gemini) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Gemini\/status\/1050735666055778305?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 12, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Winer notes in the post that LTC is part of the original Bitcoin network and Gemini hopes to use it to push the adoption of crypto for daily transactions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Gemini has also been given the green light by the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYSDFS), which already oversees the exchange. Winer stressed the importance of security to Gemini in the announcement, saying the exchange has worked with the NYSDFS \u201cclosely\u201d to gain approval for LTC on their platform: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe addition of Litecoin further solidifies Gemini\u2019s standing as the go-to exchange for retail and institutional investors alike. Gemini continues to grow with a \u201csecurity-first\u201d approach and we have worked closely with the NYSDFS to gain approval for Litecoin trading and custody services.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">New York State Attorney General Barbara D. Underwood is one of many government regulators to raise concerns around the security of cryptocurrency and its related exchanges, and her office recently collected data from many of the major platforms on their security measures. Her office compiled the findings into a report that raised some hackles in the crypto community, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-kraken-respond-to-ny-virtual-markets-integrity-report\/\"><span class=\"s2\">provoking public responses from Kraken and Coinbase<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Holding Off on BCH<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Gemini also planned an announcement for <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin-cash\/\">Bitcoin Cash<\/a> (BCH) today, but Winer said the possibility of at least one hard fork coming in November caused the company to be wary enough to hold off for now, as the forks may not support the security measures needed for safe trading.\u00a0Winer wrote:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSome of those forks lack the replay protection feature that would be required for Gemini to safely support Bitcoin Cash.
