{"id":87440,"date":"2018-10-06T06:00:44","date_gmt":"2018-10-06T13:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=87440"},"modified":"2020-03-24T07:01:30","modified_gmt":"2020-03-24T07:01:30","slug":"fraudsters-steal-50000-in-btc-from-melbourne-bitcoin-atm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/fraudsters-steal-50000-in-btc-from-melbourne-bitcoin-atm\/","title":{"rendered":"Fraudsters Steal $50,000 in BTC from Melbourne Bitcoin ATM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fraudsters posing as debt collectors convinced four victims to deposit over $50,000 into a Bitcoin ATM in Australia\u2019s southern county of Victoria, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/victoria\/victims-lose-50k-in-bitcoin-scam-in-melbourne-s-west-20181005-p507uz.html\">reported<\/a> Sydney Morning Herald on Oct.5.<\/p>\n<p>Police authorities stated that all victims were migrants and were bullied into paying up a hefty amount into the ATM, with the attackers warning of severe legal consequences if the amount was not paid.<\/p>\n<p>The four victims were told to encash money from local bank accounts and deposit funds to a Bitcoin ATM in the Braybrook area of Melbourne. All victims were given a code prior to the deposit that contained the attacker\u2019s bitcoin address.<\/p>\n<p>The four crimes were not conducted together, and the victims\u2019 accounts to local police prove the attackers utilized variations of their scam to extort funds. Melbourne alone has over 20 Bitcoin ATMs scattered throughout the city, which allows citizens to exchange cash for BTC instantly. Some ATMs have a \u201creverse\u201d feature, allowing one to deposit BTC and encash AUD.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2015, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission\u2019s annual Scamwatch report stated citizens lost over $2 million in cryptocurrency and ICO scams, with over $1.2 million in Bitcoin scams alone.<\/p>\n<p>Most victims were drawn to the sector after a surge in public interest for Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs).
