Athena Bitcoin, a company based in the United States, was the one to install the ATM. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rapid Expansion by 2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Odyssey Group, another U.S. company, could be expanding its reach into the country soon in the wake of an economic crisis in Spain that has seen a precipitous drop in value for the peso. Odyssey wants to install 150 ATMs by years end and have 80 percent of those able to send and receive BTN by early 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Bitcoin ATM developers are looking to build 1,500 Bitcoin ATMs in Argentina to combat inflation. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qmEm4GyKtD\">pic.twitter.com\/qmEm4GyKtD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Unbankd (@unbankdco) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/unbankdco\/status\/1047846766501134336?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 4, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So far, the peso has dropped by 50 percent when valued against the US dollar in 2018. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cToday, the cryptocurrency ATMs in the world are growing exponentially. In Argentina, there were no commercial ATMs and the idea was to be the first to capture the market,\u201d Dante Galeazzi, Athena\u2019s Argentina operations manager, stated in an interview. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Galeazzi added that since the peso\u2019s drop in value, the area has seen a corresponding increase in BTN transactions. He says he sees cryptocurrency as a way to safeguard the value of the country\u2019s native peso, as well as a way to invest in the financial market. Athena\u2019s ATM machines allow the user to buy and sell crypto, and currently are only set up for BTN, but the company has plans to support <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin-cash\/\">Bitcoin Cash<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/litecoin\/\">Litecoin<\/a> in the future. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Odyssey claims its machines will allow customers to not only buy and sell digital assets, but also complete deposits, withdrawals, and transfers similar to traditional banks. Earlier this week Venezuela <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/venezuelan-president-nicolas-maduro-announces-launch-of-countrys-petro-cryptocurrency-availability-date\/\">launched the first government-backed cryptocurrency<\/a>, which it has named the Petro, to try and combat the country\u2019s tremendous rise in inflation. The Petro is backed by Venezuelan oil reserves, and its price reflects the price of oil, though President Maduro has claimed the currency is also backed by gold, diamonds, and other commodities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The fact that the state will \u201cpre-mine\u201d and control the cryptocurrency, and that users must register to use it on a government website, has some critics of the Petro leery.
