Prior to that, as <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/chinas-biggest-payment-app-alipay-bans-accounts-trading-bitcoin-in-otc\/\">CryptoSlate reported in August<\/a>, local financial regulators in China also requested Alipay, the $60 billion fintech payment app, to block any transaction that is being sent to OTC crypto platforms.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Financial News, a publication affiliated to People\u2019s Bank of China (PBOC), disclosed that ICO and crypto trading activity in China did not completely dematerialize following the official ban in September 2017.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cICOs and virtual currency trading did not completely withdraw from China following the official ban \u2026 after the closure of the domestic virtual currency exchanges, many people turned to overseas platforms to continue participating in virtual currency transactions,\u201d the report read.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In fact, many sources and companies including Hong Kong and Taiwan-based digital asset exchange executive Terence Tsang stated that crypto trading in China became more popular after the ban.<\/p>\n<p>According to Tsang, the ban on crypto trading by the government was only targeted at exchanges within mainland China, which pretended to be overseas companies but operated inside the country. He emphasized that as for OTC platforms and exchanges in overseas markets like Hong Kong, the government of China has not effectively enforced strict policies to prevent trading.<\/p>\n<p>Tsang <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbtc.com\/2018\/09\/09\/chinese-traders-are-still-investing-in-bitcoin-by-exploiting-crypto-ban\/\">said<\/a> speaking to SCMP, a mainstream media outlet in Hong Kong:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe latest warning and potentially increased monitoring of foreign platforms is targeted at a batch of smaller exchanges that had claimed to be foreign entities, but are in fact operating in China claiming they have outsourced their operations to a Chinese company.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is extremely difficult for the Chinese government to outright ban all crypto trading activity in China because most traders acquire stablecoins like <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tether\">Tether<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/winklevoss-twins-gemini-debuts-us-dollar-backed-token\/\">Gemini Dollar<\/a>, and PAX to then invest in the crypto market through cryptocurrency-only exchanges.<\/p>\n<p>To fully prohibit crypto trading, local financial regulators will need to censor out wire transfers from China to Hong Kong and other overseas markets, which is incredibly impractical as investors can simply create shell company savings accounts to receive funds.<\/p>\n<p>One source close to a major exchange in Asia said that the only real way for the Chinese government to stop crypto trading is to shut down VPNs.<\/p>\n<p>The source said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cChinese regulators definitely have the technical ability to shut down VPNs. However, traditionally it takes numerous conversations with different stakeholders to reach a consensus on configuring a firewall, which lengthens the process.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>What Happens to China?<\/h2>\n<p>Cryptocurrency trading activity in <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/places\/china\">China<\/a> has increased so rapidly in the past nine months to a point in which companies have started to raise millions of dollars in seed funding to provide insurance and security services to digital asset OTC trading platforms in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The growth of the local market, despite the existing ban, is expected to continue even with the government\u2019s restriction on trading.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government of China and its central bank the People\u2019s Bank of China (PBoC) enforced a strict crypto trading ban in September 2017.
