{"id":84776,"date":"2018-09-21T00:00:35","date_gmt":"2018-09-21T07:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=84776"},"modified":"2026-04-30T11:42:22","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T10:42:22","slug":"augur-users-down-90-percent-since-july-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/augur-users-down-90-percent-since-july-launch\/","title":{"rendered":"Augur Users Down 90 Percent Since July Launch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/products\/augur\/\">Augur<\/a>, an open source oracle and prediction market protocol built on the Ethereum blockchain, has seen a serious dip in users since it first launched in July, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/dappradar.com\/app\/673\/augur\">data<\/a> from DappRadar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A chart on the site's dedicated Augur page\u2013which tracks tweets, the amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a> being traded on the app and the number of users, among other things\u2013showed 260 users on the platform in July, and just 24 users in the past 24 hours as of writing. The dip has people asking just what went wrong after this initial peak in users. What\u2019s causing Augur\u2019s popularity as a forecasting platform to die off?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">Looking for Answers<\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Augur had 25 users in the last 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly one person per hour.<\/p>\n<p>That&#39;s a 90% drop in users since launch week back in July.<\/p>\n<p>Augur is currently the 44th ranked ETH dApp by users. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/I8fGLKxLcx\">pic.twitter.com\/I8fGLKxLcx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Kevin Rooke (@kerooke) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kerooke\/status\/1042535997634801664?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 19, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Twitter user Kevin Rooke noticed the trend and asked people directly why they were disenchanted with Augur, or just chose not to use it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The answers he got seemed to indicate that people either thought using the app was too risky due to its association with gambling, the app's interface was too time-consuming and cumbersome or people who would be interested in a forecasting app would rather use one specifically designed for gambling, like <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/wagerr\/\">Wagerr<\/a>, instead. You are not going to get mainstream adoption with people having to sync client locallly. Through the app, users can create their own trading markets for any outcome they desire as well as trade currency based on what they believe the result of that event will be.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Users can also set a closing date when they create the market, and once it closes the winners are paid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For example, some of the <span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/predictions.global\/\">current<\/a> open markets\u00a0<\/span>are betting on the price of gold, how many platinum singles Ariana Grande will be awarded in 2019 and the outcome of an upcoming football game; people can literally bet on anything they want. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since the markets are decentralized, they can\u2019t be censored or shut down by any one party. The system, theoretically, runs itself by keeping track of currency traded, the closing dates of markets and distributing payouts to the winners. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Augur was built around the idea that the larger, more diverse a group of people with the ability to input information into a system, the more accurate the information obtained by that system will be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Websites like Quora use this principle to answer people's questions, the idea being that someone out there will have the right answer given the vastness of the internet. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70421\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70421\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-70421\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/celebrity-assassinations-augur-social-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/users-bet-on-celebrity-assassinations-on-augur-prediction-markets\/\">Users Bet on Celebrity Assassinations on Augur Prediction Markets<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Augur takes this principle and applies it to predicting the outcome of events.
