With a roadmap recently revealed, Ethereum 2.0 and second-layer scaling solutions are now on the way.<\/p>\n<h2>What's New and Who's Building Ethereum 2.0?<\/h2>\n<p>Developers at decentralized Ethereum proof-of-stake (PoS) pool Rocket Pool published a rough outline of the Ethereum 2.0 roadmap, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/rocket-pool\/ethereum-2-0-whos-building-it-54a735442e\">blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ethereum 2.0: Who&#39;s building it?<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GTcCzfr9ja\">https:\/\/t.co\/GTcCzfr9ja<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VitalikButerin\/status\/1037940716016558080?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 7, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The Ethereum 2.0 mainnet will feature second-layer scaling solutions, such as Plasma and Sharding, and will combine key projects to achieve a PoS consensus mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to client improvements, Ethereum 2.0 will offer an ecosystem of open-source software that includes new smart contract languages, RPC libraries and development tools.<\/p>\n<p>Through updates to scalability and efficiency, Ethereum 2.0 hopes to enhance transaction throughput and become a &#8220;platform for new economic systems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Given its emphasis on decentralization, Ethereum 2.0 will be built on multiple levels by several Ethereum software developer groups.<\/p>\n<p>PegaSys, the protocol engineering group at ConsenSys, is also playing a key role in developing aspects of Ethereum's Sharding client. Other software developer groups working on Shard clients and Beacon Chain protocols include: Prysmatic\u00a0Labs, Sigma Prime, Satuts, Chain Safe Systems, Ether Camp and Trinity Team.<\/p>\n<p>Darren Langley, a senior blockchain developer at Rocket Pool, noted conversations around developing a common testing language for Ethereum 2.0:<\/p>\n<section class=\"section section--body\">\n<div class=\"section-content\">\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--insetColumn\">\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"ed52\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li graf--trailing\">&#8220;An essential process being discussed is the need for a common testing language that encodes test cases\u200a\u2014\u200aenabling researchers to define a bunch of tests with expected results that each team can use to validate their implementation against the specification, providing consistency across the different teams.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The official launch date of the Ethereum 2.0 client has not been disclosed.<\/p>\n<h2>Ethereum's Second-Layer Scaling Solutions<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryTerm\">Sharding<\/span>\u00a0is a scaling solution that uses shards, or micro-chains, to process separate types of transactions on the\u00a0<span class=\"glossaryTerm\">Ethereum<\/span>\u00a0blockchain\u2013requiring only a group of nodes to verify relevant transactions rather than the entire network.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to Bitcoin\u2019s\u00a0<span class=\"glossaryTerm\">Lightning Network<\/span>, Plasma adds a second layer of\u00a0<span class=\"glossaryTerm\">off-chain\u00a0<\/span>branches to the\u00a0<span class=\"glossaryTerm\">Ethereum<\/span>\u00a0main chain to process high-volume, intensive smart contract protocols more quickly, updating the base layer only when transactions are complete.<\/p>\n<p>On July 10, Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin described the layer-two systems built atop the Ethereum main chain at RISE,\u00a0Asia\u2019s largest Tech conference:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c[<span class=\"glossaryTerm\">Ethereum<\/span>\u00a0is moving] into a space where it can serve as the layer one trust system, and built into\u00a0<span class=\"glossaryTerm\">Ethereum<\/span>\u00a0we\u2019ll have hundreds of thousands of transactions in the layer two systems and we\u2019re going to see that ramified this year.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Each second-layer system is meant to improve scalability on the platform by running dApps independently from the\u00a0<span class=\"glossaryTerm\">Ethereum<\/span>\u00a0main chain.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryTerm\">Ethereum<\/span>\u00a0will become a base layer for dApps built on its second-layer sidechains, allowing dApps to maintain the\u00a0<span class=\"glossaryTerm\">Ethereum<\/span>\u00a0protocol\u2019s security while operating independently to avoid network congestion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since its inception, leading smart contract platform Ethereum has been facing issues with scalability and network congestion.
