The Gibraltar Blockchain Exchange (GBX) may be a part of this new crop; having shared with CryptoSlate the context of its recently launched institutional-grade digital asset exchange (GBX-DAX) and token-sale platform (GBX-Grid).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/category\/places\/gibraltar\">Gibraltar<\/a>, the tiny British overseas territory operating under the stipulations of both the European Union and the European Economic Area, may be painted often as a tough nut for startups to crack.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to blockchain, however, GBX would see Gibraltar as offering a warmer welcome than most.<\/p>\n<p>As of January 1, 2018, the pseudo-sovereign state opened the gates to blockchain firms with its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gfsc.gi\/dlt\">Distributed Ledger Technology Regulatory Framework<\/a> \u2014 a development that makes Gibraltar more than \u201c<i>just crypto-friendly<\/i>\u201d, according to GBX\u2019s Asia-Pacific Business Development Manager, Chuan Ji Lim.<\/p>\n<h2>A History of Regulation<\/h2>\n<p>When GBX\u2019s parent company, the Gibraltar Stock Exchange (GSX), set up shop in 2014 as the nation\u2019s first fully licensed stock exchange, it was presumably spared little scrutiny by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission \u2014 the watchdog for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gibraltar.gov.gi\/new\/gibraltar-finance\">self-declared<\/a> offshore finance-hub.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30414\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30414\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-30414\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/gibraltar-icos-facebook-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"Gibraltar Moves to Legalize and Regulate ICOs\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/gibraltar-icos-facebook-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/gibraltar-icos-facebook-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/gibraltar-icos-facebook-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/gibraltar-icos-facebook.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30414\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Related:\u00a0<a title=\"Gibraltar Moves to Legalize and Regulate ICOs\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/gibraltar-moves-legalize-regulate-icos\/\">Gibraltar Moves to Legalize and Regulate ICOs<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And when it comes to the comparatively uncharted waters of cryptocurrency, the commission doesn\u2019t appear to be giving GSX, or anyone for that matter, a free ride. GBX has gone through a deep and thorough review as part of a robust application process with the Commission.<\/p>\n<p>However high the bar to entry may have been set in Gibraltar, GSX evidently sees a mission for itself in the pre-regulated world of crypto \u2014 a mission which capitalizes on its four years of dealings in the notoriously regulated world of securities.<\/p>\n<p>Describing how GBX will fuel the adoption of this new asset-class, Lim stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Best practices and standards need to be established for the mainstream market to adopt tokens or digital assets to be a new asset-class. GBX, as the subsidiary of the EU-regulated Gibraltar Stock Exchange, aims to bring the traditional capital market best practices to the crypto world.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While the recently launched GBX-DAX currently offers thirteen trading pairs, the company hinted at buckling down in the \u201cnear future\u201d with the addition of security tokens \u00a0\u2014 an asset-class they believe will be \u201chuge\u201d, and will expand to incorporate the multi-trillion-dollar equities and traditional bonds markets.<\/p>\n<p>The outfit would presumably have a smooth road ahead \u2014 with GSX already having cleared the gates with an EU stock exchange license, according to Lim:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe launching of a regulated security token offering will take place using the GSX license, as GSX is itself already an EU-regulated stock exchange.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>GSX appears to be willing to bring this tokenized future to fruition; with their Grid platform aiming to become \u201cthe pathway helping companies in their journey from early stage token sale all the way to IPO.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To the most stoic proponents of decentralization, such institutionalization may ring warning bells \u2014 a throwback to the \u2018crypto-vs-finance\u2019 mentality spawned in the early days of the emerging technology.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71430\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71430\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-71430\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/gibraltar-united-crypto-social-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-71430\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Related:\u00a0<a title=\"Gibraltar United Becomes First Football Team to Pay Players in Cryptocurrency\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/first-football-team-gibraltar-united-to-pay-players-in-cryptocurrency\/\">Gibraltar United Becomes First Football Team to Pay Players in Cryptocurrency<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Recent developments may be putting these bipolar arguments to the test, however, as bipartisan efforts see firsts achieved for both industries.<\/p>\n<p>Union AG, for one, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/worlds-first-fully-regulated-bank-to-launch-security-token-and-stable-coin\/\">recently announced<\/a> it would become the first fully regulated bank to launch its own security token and stable coin; milestones which will invariably give a hearty push towards the mass adoption of what still largely remains a peripheral asset-class and technology.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Wall Street waits on the green light from Capitol Hill, seeds appear to have been scattered further afield in pastures of friendlier regulation.
