{"id":79307,"date":"2018-08-28T15:00:35","date_gmt":"2018-08-28T22:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=79307"},"modified":"2018-09-09T19:10:03","modified_gmt":"2018-09-10T02:10:03","slug":"pwc-report-blockchain-technology-to-reach-3-trillion-by-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/pwc-report-blockchain-technology-to-reach-3-trillion-by-2030\/","title":{"rendered":"PwC Report: Blockchain Technology to Reach $3 Trillion by 2030"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PwC, a \u201cBig Four\u201d auditing firm, recently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.co.uk\/press-room\/press-releases\/regulatory-uncertainty-trust-barriers-to-blockchain.html\">published<\/a> research that found 84 percent of companies have either a \u201clive\u201d blockchain project or experiment underway.<\/p>\n<h2>China Primed to Lead Blockchain Innovation<\/h2>\n<p>The company surveyed over 600 executives from 15 countries\u2013including the U.S., India, China, Africa and Sweden\u2013with only 14 percent of respondents having \u201cno involvement in blockchain technology.\u201d (The sum does not equal 100 percent due to rounding.)<\/p>\n<p>The study also found that 30 percent of respondents\u00a0believe China is set to dominate blockchain development over the next five years, with only 18 percent backing the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, four out of five executives confirmed blockchain projects were underway at their organizations, with 15 percent of respondents having \u201clive\u201d networks up and running. Thirty-two percent of the firms are still developing their blockchain products, while 10 percent are running pilot models and 7 percent have \u201cpaused\u201d research and development.<\/p>\n<p>PwC cited a Gartner report forecasting a $3 trillion market value of blockchain business by 2030, with the survey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/blockchainsurvey\">recognizing<\/a> ICOs and asset tokenization as a significant feature of the technology\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<h2>Trust: A Compelling Concern<\/h2>\n<p>A vast majority of the respondents cited regulatory uncertainty and a lack of trust as the \u201cbiggest barriers\u201d to mainstream technology adoption, with 45 percent terming it the most significant hurdle to adoption.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Davies, a blockchain consultant at PwC, stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBusinesses tell us that they don\u2019t want to be left behind by blockchain, even if at this early stage of its development, concerns on trust and regulation remain.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Davies added that blockchain technology is \u201ctrustless\u201d in nature, but companies \u201cconfront trust at nearly every turn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davies noted blockchain technology presents a considerable ecosystem for companies and is unlike an \u201cIT project,\u201d meaning it involves put down rules, robust regulations, globally-accepted standards and perennial flexibility toward regulatory decisions.<\/p>\n<h2>Blockchain Frameworks Defined<\/h2>\n<p>Survey results are understandably dominated by finance and fintech service companies, with 46 percent respondents calling it the \u201cleading\u201d sector in the coming years. Other identified disruptors were healthcare, industrial manufacturing and energy.<\/p>\n<p>The study also identified four \u201ckey areas\u201d for startups and large organizations looking to integrate a blockchain-based framework into their business. These include making the business case, building an ecosystem, concentrating on user-centric design and navigating regulatory uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>According to Davies:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cA well-designed blockchain doesn\u2019t just cut out intermediaries, it reduces costs and increases speed, reach, transparency and traceability for many business processes.
