{"id":74142,"date":"2018-08-09T02:00:05","date_gmt":"2018-08-09T09:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=74142"},"modified":"2020-04-06T01:19:12","modified_gmt":"2020-04-06T00:19:12","slug":"augur-fake-data-loophole-discovered-by-bounty-hunter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/augur-fake-data-loophole-discovered-by-bounty-hunter\/","title":{"rendered":"Augur: Fake Data Loophole Discovered by Bounty Hunter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Blockchain-based predictions marketplace <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/augur\">Augur<\/a> is under fire after a significant security vulnerability was uncovered by bounty hunters who could potentially be used to sift off millions of dollars.<\/p>\n<h2>Betting on Augur\u2019s Security?<\/h2>\n<p>As per a <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/hardfork\/2018\/08\/07\/augur-fake-data-bug\/\">report<\/a> by The Next Web on Aug. 7, the decentralized betting platform has low levels of customer and interface security\u2013allowing hackers to duplicate the platform, create fake datasets and rig betting outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>First published on HackerOne, a crowd-sourced ethical hacking platform that rewards users who detect bugs, ethical hacker <a href=\"https:\/\/hackerone.com\/droblin\">droblin<\/a> created a <a href=\"https:\/\/hackerone.com\/reports\/386587\">post<\/a>\u00a0that listed \u201cClient-Side Enforcement of Server-Side Security\u201d as a \u201cweakness\u201d of the Augur protocol.<\/p>\n<p>The hacker listed some steps that made it possible to fake several aspects of the Augur protocol:<\/p>\n<p>Such attack vectors are called \u201cframe jacking\u201d by security experts, meaning a protocol\u2019s underlying HTML code is manipulated and exploited by nefarious actors to gain control of the output.\u00a0In this case, Augur\u2019s prediction data.<\/p>\n<p>A \u201cframe-jacked\u201d user would view the correct domain name, but be shown false data originating from the hacker\u2019s servers.<\/p>\n<p>Droblin explained the extent of such a vulnerability in his post on HackerOne:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cUser visits a link from the internet; an attacker replaces his Augur application data then\u2013market data, Ethereum addresses, everything.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For a platform like Augur (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/augur\/\">REP<\/a>), which relies <i>solely<\/i> on correct data and collated information to function, this lapse in security is insurmountable.<\/p>\n<p>The primary question arises of how data is manipulated when blockchain is fundamentally immutable, and the answer lies with Augur\u2019s decision to store a certain number of files in local servers belonging to the company. Hence, while Augur\u2019s blockchain is fully intact and working well, hackers have, or could have, manipulated the front end.<\/p>\n<p>For a project that <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/augur-prediction-market-confirms-first-20k-in-bets-have-paid-out\/\">raised<\/a> $5.5 million in 2016, such poor design choices represent a single point of failure, especially considering the increased attention the cryptocurrency industry enjoys from hackers and other bad actors.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the security research blasted out on Augur\u2019s comments on the HackerOne post after the company classified the hack under \u201cmedium severity:\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researcher also explored the possible consequences of such bugs, \u00a0after disagreeing with its medium-grade severity classification by the Augur team. Droblin stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Someone could find it and just create post a Medium or somewhere else, describing how is it easy to hijack Augur\u2019s UI data,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis stupid, simple, small and critical bug was found in Augur\u2019s bug bounty program, the one with very high bonuses for essential bugs and meager expectations for such bugs being actually found.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While the post has since been taken down and Augur\u2019s developers have maintained their classification of the incident, droblin was paid $5,000 in bounties, up from the standard $1,500 amount for that level of severity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69518\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69518\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-69518\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/augur-prediction-social-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69518\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Related:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/augur-prediction-market-confirms-first-20k-in-bets-have-paid-out\/\">Augur Prediction Market Confirms First $20K in Bets Have Paid Out<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>CryptoSlate first reported on the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/augur-prediction-market-confirms-first-20k-in-bets-have-paid-out\/\">enterprising and successful launch<\/a> of the prediction marketplace in July, finding that the platform paid out $20,000 to punters in its first week, spread across a wide range of betting markets.<\/p>\n<p>There may be a few\u00a0<span class=\"css-133coio etbu2a32\">malevolent\u00a0<\/span>aspects to Augur\u2019s platform, courtesy of the decentralized, open-for-all, censor-free derivatives markets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/users-bet-on-celebrity-assassinations-on-augur-prediction-markets\/\">Celebrities assassinations<\/a>, for instance, also became a hot topic for the platform in July ahead of other forms of betting, such as sports or weather forecasts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Blockchain-based predictions marketplace Augur is under fire after a significant security vulnerability was uncovered by bounty hunters who could potentially be used to sift off millions of dollars.
