User identity management, however, remains critical to any dApps and is currently managed by \u201ctrusted\u201d third parties\u2014a problem the ERC725 identity standard aims to solve.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ethereum\/EIPs\/issues\/725\">ERC725 identity standard<\/a> is the brainchild of Fabian Vogelsteller, the creator of the ERC20 token standard that is used extensively in the blockchain ecosystem. Created on Oct. 2, 2017, the ERC725 standard has been adopted by numerous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/originprotocol\/managing-identity-with-a-ui-for-erc-725-5c7422b38c09\">blockchain projects<\/a>\u00a0aiming to incorporate decentralized identity standards into peer-to-peer marketplaces.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Nice to see some actual work in progress on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ERC725?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ERC725<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OriginProtocol?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@originprotocol<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vObO2B1j3k\">https:\/\/t.co\/vObO2B1j3k<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Fabian Vogelsteller (@feindura) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/feindura\/status\/986889693311717376?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 19, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>ERC725 Could Solve the Identity Problem<\/h2>\n<p>Origin Protocol, one of the most prominent projects to incorporate the ERC725 standard, highlights the benefits of a blockchain-based identity standard as a method of managing user reputation and trustworthiness in decentralized, peer-to-peer marketplaces.<\/p>\n<p>A dApp equivalent to Airbnb, for example, would require that users renting properties identify themselves in order to prevent fraud or property destruction. In the current blockchain ecosystem, such a dApp would need to rely on trusted third party identity management or Oracle platforms, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/chainlink\">ChainLink<\/a>, to hypothetically integrate with third parties.<\/p>\n<p>Replying to comments on <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ethereum\/EIPs\/issues\/725\">GitHub<\/a>, Vogelsteller emphasized the need for standardized identity management:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Currently everybody collects all information about you separately to make sure they know who you are \u2026 A standard will help insofar that everybody can auto check certain claims, and therefore don\u2019t need to store actual details about you anymore, as they\u2014as long as they trust the claim issuer\u2013don\u2019t need to have the actual information. The current over-collecting is because of lack of a better system.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>How Does ERC725 Work?<\/h2>\n<p>Origin Protocol imagines an implementation of the ERC725 standard that would see users seeking to verify their identity issue a new \u201cidentity contract\u201d that contains a valid claim issued by the platform they are seeking to verify themselves on.<\/p>\n<p>The issuer would provide the user with a cryptographic signature proving that the user controls a particular email, phone number\u00a0or, according to Vogelsteller, address or biometric data, which is added to the identity contract.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of a dApps Airbnb equivalent, a user would be able to attempt to rent a property via a listing contract, at which point the listing contract would investigate the user\u2019s identity for a claim issued by the \u201cAirBnB\u201d dApps. By retrieving the public key from the claim signature, the listing contract could verify it is still valid on the contract issued by the dApps, allowing the transaction to proceed.<\/p>\n<h2>The Future of Decentralized Identity<\/h2>\n<p>The ERC725 could potentially create an ecosystem in which contracts are able to accept claims issued by virtually any dApps or blockchain platform, facilitating distributed, interoperable identity across any project. Should the U.S. Postal Service deploy their own claim issuer contract, for example, any contract that requires a verified user address could automatically search for USPS-issued claims before allowing interaction.<\/p>\n<p>While the ERC725 standard is still in a relatively early stage of development, integration with projects like Origin Protocol is already underway.
