On Aug. 6, the leading investment bank announced that it is considering offering custodial services for cryptocurrency funds.<\/p>\n<h2>Goldman Sachs Embraces New Asset Class<\/h2>\n<p>Goldman Sachs is exploring a custody offering for cryptocurrency funds, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-08-06\/goldman-is-said-to-consider-custody-offering-for-crypto-funds\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The custodial service means Goldman Sachs would hold cryptocurrencies on behalf of funds, providing a safeguard for client capital from hacking and cybertheft. If enacted, Goldman Sachs would become the first major investment bank to back cryptocurrency funds\u2013potentially drawing an influx of institutional capital to the sector.<\/p>\n<p>The launch date of the custody offering has not yet been disclosed. According to Bloomberg, the launch of a custody operation could lead to further institutional solutions for cryptocurrency investment, such as prime-brokerage services.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Bloomberg, a spokesperson for Goldman Sachs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-08-06\/goldman-is-said-to-consider-custody-offering-for-crypto-funds\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn response to client interest in various digital products we are exploring how best to serve them in this space. At this point we have not reached a conclusion on the scope of our digital asset offering.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Wall Street to Crypto: Institutional Solutions on the Rise<\/h2>\n<p>In early May, Goldman Sachs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/goldman-sachs-confirms-launch-of-bitcoin-trading-desk\/\">confirmed<\/a>\u00a0plans to launch a Bitcoin futures trading desk to meet rising client demand. One month later, the firm revealed plans to expand its cryptocurrency\u00a0division beyond Bitcoin futures.<\/p>\n<p>On June 20, Goldman Sachs COO David Solomon told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-06-20\/goldman-sachs-mulling-crypto-trades-beyond-futures-solomon-says\">Bloomberg:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are clearing some futures around Bitcoin, talking about doing some other activities there, but it\u2019s going very cautiously.\u00a0We\u2019re listening to our clients and trying to help our clients as they\u2019re exploring those things too.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Morgan Stanley also began clearing Bitcoin futures contracts at the start of 2018.<\/p>\n<p>On July 2,\u00a0San Francisco-based startup\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-secures-20-billion-hedge-fund-and-plans-to-offer-margin-financing-for-institutional-investors\/\">Coinbase<\/a>\u00a0launched its own custodial service for institutional investors, called Coinbase Custody.\u00a0Shortly after, Coinbase secured a $20 billion hedge fund through its prime broker to give institutional investors access to a greater variety of financial services, such as margin financing.<\/p>\n<p>On June 26,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cboe-seeks-sec-approval-for-bitcoin-etf\/\">Cboe futures exchange<\/a>\u00a0submitted a Bitcoin ETF application to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
