Starting August 1, 2018, Korean cryptocurrency exchange <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tag\/bithumb\">Bithumb<\/a> will no longer issue new virtual accounts due to the failure to renew a banking contract.<\/p>\n<h2>South Korea Cracks Down on KYC and AML<\/h2>\n<p>Bithumb has suspended new bank-linked virtual accounts after failing to establish a contract with NH Nonghyup Bank, reports <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesskorea.co.kr\/news\/articleView.html?idxno=24028\">BusinessKorea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bithumb is the second largest South Korean digital asset exchange by 24-hour trading volume and holds 33% of the domestic market share, according to data by <a href=\"http:\/\/fintechnews.sg\/18967\/korea\/top-10-korean-cryptocurrency-exchanges\/\">FinTechNews<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The temporary halt on new accounts will not impact or prevent current virtual account holders from withdrawing or depositing funds linked to their bank accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Bithumb's\u00a0temporary halt follows South Korea's recent ban on anonymous trading through anonymous virtual accounts in January 2018.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64033\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64033\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-64033\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/bithumb-social-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"Bithumb Recovers Half of Stolen Funds From $31 Million Hack\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64033\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Related:<a title=\"Bithumb Recovers Half of Stolen Funds From $31 Million Hack\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bithumb-recovers-half-of-stolen-funds-from-31-mln-hack\/\">\u00a0Bithumb Recovers Half of Stolen Funds From $31 Million Hack<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To prevent money laundering and increase market transparency, the mandate requires real name verification for an individual's exchange and bank accounts before authorizing cryptocurrency trading.<\/p>\n<p>The regulation also requires that cryptocurrency exchanges renew their contracts with commercial banks every six months, which Bithumb has failed to do.<\/p>\n<p>Bithumb reportedly terminated its original contract with Shinhan Bank and opted to renew a separate contract with NH Nonghyup Bank but was recently denied. In an interview with BusinessKorea, an official from Nonghyup Bank <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesskorea.co.kr\/news\/articleView.html?idxno=24028\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe have decided not to renew the contract because Bithumb still has problems in protecting consumers and information and preventing money laundering.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In mid-June, Bithumb suffered a large-scale hack and lost 35 billion KRW (~$31 million) from hot wallets stored on its exchange. Since then, Bithumb has <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bithumb-recovers-half-of-stolen-funds-from-31-mln-hack\/\">recovered<\/a> about half of the stolen funds.<\/p>\n<p>Following Nonghyup's denial to renew the\u00a0contract, a Bithumb official <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesskorea.co.kr\/news\/articleView.html?idxno=24028\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We have a consensus with Nonghyup Bank on renewal of the contract. We are planning to iron out our different views on some legal expressions and start issuing virtual accounts soon.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Among the top-4 cryptocurrency exchanges in South Korea, Bithumb is the currently the only operator without a commercial banking partnership.
