Conducted by anonymous developer \u201cBitpico,\u201d the community-driven stress test purportedly revealed evidence that the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin-cash\/\">Bitcoin Cash<\/a> network is operating with a significant number of full nodes located on the \u201csame server rack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The stress test was first announced on June 22, 2018, when Bitpico announced the launch of an attack that would leverage thousands of attack nodes over the course of 6 weeks, stating that 85% of all Bitcoin Cash nodes are located within two data centers:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/bcash?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#bcash<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24bch&src=ctag&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$bch<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Bitcoin?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@bitcoin<\/a> attack has been started; it will continue to run as we work to amplify it over the coming months. We expect to have 5000 Bcash attack nodes in roughly 6 weeks and then we will multi-fork the chain. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rogerkver?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@rogerkver<\/a> will now cry ?. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/hacking?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#hacking<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/skills?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#skills<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/security?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#security<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dR8ksy6Lz8\">pic.twitter.com\/dR8ksy6Lz8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; \u0243itPico (@bitPico) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bitPico\/status\/1010309235459096577?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 22, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Stress Tester Has History of Unreliability<\/h2>\n<p>The Bitpico stress test which, <a href=\"https:\/\/pastebin.com\/bJjGvUTu\">according<\/a> to its creator, combines \u201clow-level TCP\/IP stack attacks to high-level bitcoin cash protocol attacks,\u201d was met with skepticism from the cryptocurrency community upon announcement, with many community members dismissing the threats of an attack as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/r0bbot\/status\/1010612953115189250\">laughable<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">just helping <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bitPico?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@bitpico<\/a> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/bch?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#bch<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Bitcoin?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@bitcoin<\/a> attack <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/hacking?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#hacking<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/skills?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#skills<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/security?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#security<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uAspsRjjvR\">pic.twitter.com\/uAspsRjjvR<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; rob (@r0bbot) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/r0bbot\/status\/1010612953115189250?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 23, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Bitpico captured the attention of the crypto ecosystem during the late 2017 segwit2x drama by <a href=\"https:\/\/lists.linuxfoundation.org\/pipermail\/bitcoin-segwit2x\/2017-November\/000689.html\">stating<\/a> that the SegWit2x fork would occur regardless of the desires of the Bitcoin community at large:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are carrying out the fork regardless as everything is set in motion. Backing down the difficulty right now is a strategy. Wonder why 30% network hash-rate disappeared? \u00a0It\u2019s ours; the miners that will continue what is set in motion&#8230; A handful of humans cannot stop what they have no control over\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Bitpico\u2019s empty threats did nothing to alter the result of the Segwit2x debate, leading many cryptocurrency community members to ignore the results of the developer\u2019s Bitcoin Cash stress test. The evidence gathered by Bitpico during the test, however, echo similar sentiments expressed by Bitcoin developer <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/nick-szabo\/\">Nick Szabo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The Case for Bitcoin Cash Centralization<\/h2>\n<p>Szabo announced concerns regarding the centralization of the Bitcoin Cash network in December 2017, referring to the network as \u201ccentralized sockpuppetry\u201d and retweeting evidence gathered by software architect Sondre Bjell\u00e5s that 54% of Bitcoin Cash nodes at the time were hosted by Alibaba.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;Bitcoin Cash&quot; is centralized sock puppetry. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OJJo5vwEfn\">https:\/\/t.co\/OJJo5vwEfn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Nick Szabo (@NickSzabo4) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NickSzabo4\/status\/943919997067264000?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 21, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In early 2018, Microsoft released a <a href=\"https:\/\/cloudblogs.microsoft.com\/enterprisemobility\/2018\/02\/12\/decentralized-digital-identities-and-blockchain-the-future-as-we-see-it\/\">statement<\/a> highlighting the threat to decentralization presented by block size increases such as those implemented by Bitcoin Cash, with Microsoft Identity Division Director of Program Management Alex Simons stating that layer 2 scaling solutions \u2014 such as the Lightning Network \u2014 are more effective and less centralized:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhile some blockchain communities have increased on-chain transaction capacity (e.g. blocksize increases), this approach generally degrades the decentralized state of the network and cannot reach the millions of transactions per second the system would generate at world-scale.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Evidence purportedly captured by the Bitpico stress test demonstrated that 98% of all show nodes currently sit on the \u201csame server rack,\u201d which could potentially leave the Bitcoin Cash network highly susceptible to security threats or seizure.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">98% of the shown nodes are sitting in the same server rack.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; \u0243itPico (@bitPico) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bitPico\/status\/1016228867948851200?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 9, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>While the Bitpico stress test may <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pmullr\/status\/1016787245431513088\">claim<\/a> that 49% of all Bitcoin Cash nodes are operating on Alibaba facilities, conflicting statistics published by BCHNodes show a <a href=\"https:\/\/bchnodes.online\/countries\">fairly even spread<\/a> between the US and China-based nodes.
