Although the value of Bitcoin has decreased by 53% since January 1st, 2018, the hash rate has increased 155% in the same time period.<\/p>\n<p>The continued growth in hash power demonstrates a strong, continued belief in <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\">Bitcoin<\/a> by miners worldwide and may foreshadow a hidden bullish trend.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67612\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67612\" style=\"width: 2800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-67612\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/hashrate_vs_price.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2800\" height=\"766\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/hashrate_vs_price.jpg 2800w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/hashrate_vs_price-300x82.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/hashrate_vs_price-768x210.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/hashrate_vs_price-1024x280.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2800px) 100vw, 2800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67612\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">While both Bitcoin's price(green) and Bitcoin's hash rate(blue) grew in 2017, the hash rate has continued to grow in 2018 while the price has dropped.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Hash Rate Explained<\/h2>\n<p>In simple terms, mining is the process of running complex calculations in search of a specific number. In a race to find the number first, mining hardware is used to run through as many calculations possible\u00a0to\u00a0secure the\u00a0block reward, currently at 12.5 BTC per block.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67614\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67614\" style=\"width: 862px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67614 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/prefix.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"862\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/prefix.jpg 862w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/prefix-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/prefix-768x499.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67614\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The current hash rate of BTC is 38 EH\/s which is 38,000,000,000,000,000,000 h\/s or 38 billion trillion hashes per second.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Each calculation attempt to solve the computation is known as a &#8220;hash&#8221; and the &#8220;hash rate&#8221; is computed in hashes per second(h\/s).<\/p>\n<p>ASICs (application specific integrated circuits) have become the sole mining hardware used to mine Bitcoin due to their increased hash rate ability and higher energy efficiency. One ASIC has a mining power of approximately 12 tera-hashes per second. For comparison, in 2013, <em>the total hash rate of the Bitcoin network<\/em>\u00a0on April 29, 2013, was 79.02 Th\/s.<\/p>\n<h2>Growing Number of Miners<\/h2>\n<p>The hash rate of Bitcoin continues to hike at a rapid pace, indicating a growing number of Bitcoin miners. So far in 2018,\u00a0 it has grown 155%, from 15.04 Eh\/s to 38.43 Eh\/s.<\/p>\n<p>One possible explanation for the increase in hash rate is Bitcoin's value. Although Bitcoin has lost a lot of value in 2018, the block reward of 12.5 Bitcoin is still worth over $78,000 today. At Bitcoin's peak, a single block was worth almost a quarter million dollars and miners may view the current market as a way to accumulate more Bitcoin at lower prices.<\/p>\n<p>Another possibility explaining the increase in hash rate could be upcoming Bitcoin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitcoinblockhalf.com\/\">&#8220;halvening,&#8221;<\/a> estimated to occur around May 25, 2020. With the reward set to decrease from 12.5 BTC per block to 6.25 per block, miners may be trying to accumulate as much Bitcoin possible, before difficulty further increases and rewards decrease. The price of BTC at the time of the last two halvenings\u00a0were\u00a0$660 and $12 in 2016 and 2012, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>One interesting thing to note in the increase of hash rate is the contribution of hash power outside of the world's biggest mining pools.\u00a0This is beneficial to the Bitcoin network as it makes the power of mining less concentrated.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67616\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67616\" style=\"width: 1148px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67616 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/growing_share.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1148\" height=\"606\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/growing_share.jpg 1148w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/growing_share-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/growing_share-768x405.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/growing_share-1024x541.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1148px) 100vw, 1148px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67616\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graph from data.bitcoinity.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Overall, it is a positive sign that miners continue to demonstrate their support for Bitcoin through the increasing growth of hash rate.
