Based on Mt Gox\u2019s 2014 filing, this would amount to a payout of approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tokyo-whale-prepares-8000-btc-dump-as-crypto-bloodbath-continues\/\">$483<\/a> per Bitcoin. As of June 27, 2018, one Bitcoin is worth $6127.<\/p>\n<p>While belated, the stalled repayment may be in financial favor of creditors. One Twitter user pointed out:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Mt Gox customers will finally be paid back &#8211; in bitcoin. <br \/>Many or most customers probably would have traded away their bitcoin a couple of years ago. So they should thank MtGox for hodling their bitcoin for them!<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ragnar Lifthrasir \u2691 (@Ragnarly) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ragnarly\/status\/1010566691066032129?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 23, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Instead, civil rehabilitation proceedings do not recompense in equivalent fiat value but pay out in the original asset lost. This would entitle hack victims to claim their lost Bitcoins, and cash in on the triple-digit percentage hike the coin has seen since the hack.<\/p>\n<p>The move may quell some of the flames engulfing Mt Gox\u2019s bankruptcy drama.<\/p>\n<p>Despite losing some 850,000 BTC in the 2014 hack, Mt Gox\u2019s remaining holdings may have comfortably paid out creditors in full \u2014 with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cryptoground.com\/mtgox-cold-wallet-monitor\/\">137,891 BTC<\/a> held in the exchange\u2019s cold storage at the time of press. Under Japanese bankruptcy law, however, the bulk of the Tokyo-based company\u2019s assets would have been distributed amongst shareholders.<\/p>\n<h2>Has the Tokyo Whale Been Beached?<\/h2>\n<p>Previously overseeing Mt Gox\u2019s bankruptcy proceedings, attorney Nobuaki Kobayashi is now acting as the exchange\u2019s Civil Rehabilitation Trustee. Dubbed the \u2018Tokyo Whale\u2019, Kobayashi has repeatedly been criticized for purportedly devaluing Bitcoin when he liquidated thousands of Mt Gox Bitcoins on exchanges.<\/p>\n<p>Kobayashi, however, has steadfastly maintained that the sales did not affect price action. Reminding users of this apparent truth, the announcement states:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;As in sales from December 2017 to February 2018, upon consultation with cryptocurrency\u00a0transaction experts, Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash were sold in a manner that had no effect on\u00a0market price and not by ordinary sale on an exchange.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While some have interpreted the ruling as a red light for Kobayashi to sell any more assets, the legal document did not provide this evidence. In fact, Kobayashi highlights his continued authority in the announcement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The power and authority to administer and dispose of MTGOX\u2019s assets is still vested exclusively in me, and I will implement the civil rehabilitation proceedings, including the administration of MTGOX\u2019s assets and the investigation of claims, subject to the Tokyo District Court\u2019s supervision.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Those who lost Bitcoin in the hack will need to file claims by October 2018, however, no official schedule has been set for payments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Tokyo District Court has ordered Mt Gox to begin compensating victims of its infamous 2014 hack, effectively stalling the exchange\u2019s pending bankruptcy.
