{"id":62978,"date":"2018-06-25T02:11:14","date_gmt":"2018-06-25T09:11:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=62978"},"modified":"2026-04-16T16:05:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T15:05:08","slug":"bitmain-mines-42-of-all-bitcoin-blocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitmain-mines-42-of-all-bitcoin-blocks\/","title":{"rendered":"Bitmain Mines 42% of All Bitcoin Blocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chinese giant <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitcoin-mining-giant-bitmain-announces-potential-hong-kong-ipo\/\">Bitmain<\/a> mined more than 42% of all <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a> blocks last week, edging close to the 51% threshold required to control the entire network.<\/p>\n<p>According to BTC.com\u2019s updated <a href=\"https:\/\/btc.com\/stats\/pool?pool_mode=week\">pool statistics<\/a>, BTC.com and AntPool\u2019s efforts last week total 42.2% of the network hashrate. Both outfits are owned by Beijing-based Bitmain \u2014 the world\u2019s leading Bitcoin miner and producer of Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) chips.<\/p>\n<p>In itself, an industrial-scale operation may not offer any competitive advantage for mining, yet Bitmain\u2019s equipment may give them a leg up. By employing proprietary ASIC mining gear, the multi-national corporation may be able to validate Bitcoin blocks significantly faster than the Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) used by mundane miners.<\/p>\n<p>Bitmain may be shy of the 51% mark, yet it would appear to have spare hashpower up its sleeve. The outfit also mines <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin-cash\/\">Bitcoin Cash<\/a> (BCH) \u2014 which due to its identical PoW consensus mechanism can be mined using standard Bitcoin mining gear. While a mining unit cannot split its hashing power between the two protocols, Bitmain may choose to re-allocate its efforts at any point in time.<\/p>\n<p>In a comparison of both networks, Twitter user @CobraBitcoin highlighted Bitcoin's more centralized mining distribution as a cause for concern:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BITMAIN and their associated &quot;pools&quot; (AntPool, BTC,com, ViaBTC) controls significantly more of the hashing power on Bitcoin, then they do on Bitcoin Cash (so called &quot;BITMAIN Cash&quot;). The Chinese outfit \u2014 which made $3-4 billion in <a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2018\/02\/24\/bitcoin-mining-bitmain-profits\/\">profits<\/a> mining BTC in 2017 \u2014 may have no obvious incentive to enact bad action.
