The launch of the Digital Citizen Card will see IOTA\u2019s unique Tangle consensus method and platform used to establish an entirely new digital identification system.<\/p>\n<p>The Digital Citizen Card emerged from a partnership <a href=\"https:\/\/pr.blonde20.com\/iota-taipei\/\">established<\/a> between the Germany-based IOTA foundation and the municipality of Taipei city in January 2018 as the first of a series of projects aiming to establish Taipei as a \u201cSmart City Living Lab.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">To comply with context of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GDPR?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#GDPR<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TangleID?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TangleID<\/a> is adapting uPort components into <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24IOTA&src=ctag&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$IOTA<\/a> network for self-sovereign identity management on which <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Taipei?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Taipei<\/a> Smart City Project Management Office (TPMO) would build several applications. Several other projects are currently underway that will see blockchain technology implemented in citizen identification \u2014 such as OmiseGo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etda.or.th\/content\/etda-signs-mou-with-omise-for-driving-national-digital-id.html\">collaboration<\/a> with the Thai Government to create a blockchain-based national digital ID eKYC portal \u2014 but Taipei\u2019s Digital Citizen Card is set to become the world\u2019s first real-world implementation of DLT-based ID.<\/p>\n<h2>Taipei May Become Blockchain-Powered Smart City<\/h2>\n<p>IOTA\u2019s collaboration with the Taipei government includes assistance from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biilabs.io\/#about-us\">BiiLabs<\/a>, a Taipei-based distributed ledger technology development platform that currently works extensively with the IOTA project, creating TangleID based digital forensics systems and settlement services.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Taipei municipality and the IOTA Foundation teams up on Taipei&#39;s Smart City Living Lab initiative together with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/biilabsrocks?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@biilabsrocks<\/a> to make Taiwan&#39;s capital a leading smart city.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IOTA?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IOTA<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/smartcity?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#smartcity<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mS8M0O5Kxa\">pic.twitter.com\/mS8M0O5Kxa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; IOTA (@iotatoken) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iotatoken\/status\/958315840641826817?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 30, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In addition to establishing a blockchain-based ID system, IOTA technology is also being used in Taipei to maintain air quality. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.smartcity.org.tw\/index.php\/en-us\/news\/item\/366-air-box\">Air Box<\/a> project will see palm-sized air sensor complete with humidity, pollution, light, and temperature detectors installed in homes across Taipei, sharing air quality data via the Tangle and incentivizing participation via IOTA incentivization.<\/p>\n<p>Wei-bin Lee, the Commissioner of the Department of Information Technology in Taipei City Government, <a href=\"https:\/\/pr.blonde20.com\/iota-taipei\/\">commented<\/a> on the future of Taipei and blockchain technology implementation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIOTA is one of the innovative players in the cryptocurrency world because of its unique technology. With Taipei City always thinking ahead and with IOTA\u2019s technology, this partnership is a strategic move to usher in the era of smart cities to the citizens of Taipei. We welcome the IOTA Foundation to Taipei City and are excited to embark on the future together.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Tangle-powdered Digital Citizen Card won\u2019t just be used for the elimination of identity theft and voter fraud, however. If successful, the project could be expanded in scope to encompass secure identity-based data sharing across other public service domains such as medical history tracking.<\/p>\n<p>IOTA Foundation co-founder David S\u00f8nsteb\u00f8 highlighted the flexibility and readiness of the IOTA solution at the announcement of the Taipei Smart City partnership earlier this year:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are so excited about teaming up with Taipei City.
