{"id":57937,"date":"2018-06-04T20:30:42","date_gmt":"2018-06-05T03:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=57937"},"modified":"2020-03-24T06:49:46","modified_gmt":"2020-03-24T06:49:46","slug":"microsoft-buys-github-and-the-crypto-community-isnt-happy-about-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/microsoft-buys-github-and-the-crypto-community-isnt-happy-about-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft Buys GitHub and the Crypto Community Isn&#8217;t Happy About It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/2018\/06\/04\/microsoft-to-acquire-github-for-7-5-billion\/\">announced<\/a>\u00a0that it is buying GitHub for $7.5 billion \u2013 a move that has left many in the Bitcoin and blockchain community seething, and jumping ship over to GitHub's competitor, GitLab.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft has a hit-and-miss history of takeovers\u00a0\u2013 the acquisition of LinkedIn went rather smoothly, with much of the LinkedIn operation still running separately.<\/p>\n<p>However, when the software giant took over Skype, they were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/technology\/la-fi-tn-skype-microsoft-20180511-story.html\">inundated with complaints<\/a> surrounding the redesign as it created an unpleasant user experience for many.<\/p>\n<p>In Microsoft's recent<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/blog\/2018\/06\/04\/microsoft-github-empowering-developers\/\"> blog post<\/a>, they spoke about their open source journey and ambition to empower developers, accelerate enterprise developers and to bring developer tools to new audiences.<\/p>\n<p>Satya Nadella &#8211; Chief Executive Officer, Microsoft noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Developers are the builders of this new era, writing the world\u2019s code. And GitHub is their home.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>#movingtogitlab<\/h2>\n<p>As many people know, the crypto Twitter community is quite a vocal one and was not pleased with the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Upon the announcement of the\u00a0acquisition, the hashtag <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?vertical=default&q=%23movingtogitlab&src=tyah\">#movingtogitlab<\/a> started, and developers began doing just that.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/about.gitlab.com\/\">GitLab<\/a> didn't hesitate when it came to making sure the jump was as appealing as it could be \u2013 they are offering new users 75% discounts on Gold and Ultimate memberships.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">People are <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/movingtogitlab?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#movingtogitlab<\/a>. Bitcoin was adopted early on by cypherpunks and is generally a community that is looking for <em>more<\/em> decentralization.<\/p>\n<p>So when a corporate giant such as Microsoft takes over the platform that is cherished by so many in the crypto community, it caused quite a bit of concern.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin core developer Wladimir van der Laan tweeted:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Yes.<br \/>No real hurry, but I expect this is the beginning of a long painful road of gh toward obsolence, possibly ending the same way as codeplex did.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Wladimir (@orionwl) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/orionwl\/status\/1003549916462047232?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 4, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Bad News for GitHub, Good News for GitLab<\/h2>\n<p>Following the announcement of the merger, there was a significant spike in activity on GitLab. According to\u00a0GitLab's statistics portal,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/monitor.gitlab.net\/dashboard\/db\/github-importer?orgId=1\">Grafana<\/a>, thousands of projects and code repositories are\u00a0being imported every hour.<\/p>\n<p>GitLab appears to be embracing this influx of activity.
