Formalization and verification in Lean, a software proof assistant, required another 17 hours using GPT-6 Astra.<\/p>\n<p>The system generated an analytical proof showing that an initially smooth fluid can develop a singularity in finite time while retaining finite energy, establishing cases C and D of the Millennium Prize formulation. OpenAI released both the proof and its Lean formalization for independent scrutiny.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"cs-article-embed\">\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/openai-just-showed-why-one-of-its-former-researchers-thinks-ai-could-kill-everyone\/\" class=\"cs-article-embed__link\">\n        <div class=\"cs-article-embed__body\">\n            <span class=\"cs-article-embed__related-reading\">Related Reading<\/span>\n            <h3 class=\"cs-article-embed__title\">OpenAI just showed why one of its former researchers thinks AI could kill everyone<\/h3>\n        <\/div>\n        <span class=\"cs-article-embed__arrow\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n            <i class=\"fa-light fa-arrow-up-right\"><\/i>\n        <\/span>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>For crypto developers, the more immediate implication lies in the process. Formal verification uses mathematical specifications and theorem proving to establish whether smart-contract code behaves as intended, an area where human guidance can make verification costly and labor-intensive.<\/p>\n<h2>AI could move the security bottleneck upstream<\/h2>\n<p>The scale of OpenAI\u2019s experiment closely resembles a scenario mathematician Terence Tao described five days before the announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Tao <a href=\"https:\/\/mathstodon.xyz\/@tao\/117207849921390904\">warned<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/vitalik-buterin-now-confident-ai-wont-break-crypto-betting-90-of-his-net-worth\/\">autonomous AI systems<\/a> backed by enormous computing resources could eventually generate complex Navier-Stokes solutions and formally verify them in systems such as Lean while keeping much of the iterative discovery process out of public view.<\/p>\n<p>His concern centered on what researchers might lose along the way. Failed approaches and intermediate discoveries often produce insights that outlive the final proof, while a largely autonomous system could deliver a correct result without transferring the same depth of understanding to humans.<\/p>\n<p>That concern carries into smart-contract security as theorem proving becomes more automated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a> documentation <a href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/en\/developers\/docs\/smart-contracts\/formal-verification\/\">says<\/a> formal verification establishes whether a contract satisfies properties developers have specified in advance. Poorly written or incomplete specifications can allow vulnerabilities to escape detection even when verification succeeds.<\/p>\n<p>More capable <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/paolo-ardoino-wants-ai-agents-to-hold-tether-but-developers-are-left-on-the-hook-for-overspending\/\">AI systems<\/a> could therefore reduce the work required to construct proofs while increasing the importance of deciding what those proofs should cover.
