{"id":557878,"date":"2026-08-26T06:30:47","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T05:30:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=557878"},"modified":"2026-08-27T10:18:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T09:18:38","slug":"moonwell-has-a-1-8m-liquidity-hole-and-its-latest-plan-allocates-0-to-fix-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/moonwell-has-a-1-8m-liquidity-hole-and-its-latest-plan-allocates-0-to-fix-it\/","title":{"rendered":"$1.8M vanished in a DeFi lending glitch, and the recovery plan just allocated $0 to repay victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Decentralized lending protocol Moonwell has proposed no cbETH repayment in its latest reserve round, even as the Base market for Coinbase Wrapped Staked ETH carries a $1.77 million net shortfall.<\/p>\n<p>The allocation, published by risk service provider Anthias Labs on Aug. 24, would leave 2.8095 cbETH of listed reserves unused months after a February oracle error created the bad debt.<\/p>\n<p>Moonwell's <a href=\"https:\/\/api.moonwell.fi\/v1\/markets?chain=base\">live Base markets API<\/a> showed the imbalance was still present at 11:28 UTC on Aug. 25. A second participant reported a similar problem on Aug. 25, although the two complaints cannot establish how many suppliers were affected.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"cs-article-embed\">\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/defis-next-institutional-hurdle-is-deciding-who-can-be-trusted-to-price-the-collateral\/\" class=\"cs-article-embed__link\">\n        <div class=\"cs-article-embed__body\">\n            <span class=\"cs-article-embed__related-reading\">Related Reading<\/span>\n            <h3 class=\"cs-article-embed__title\">DeFi\u2019s next institutional hurdle is deciding who can be trusted to price real-world assets<\/h3>\n        <\/div>\n        <span class=\"cs-article-embed__arrow\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n            <i class=\"fa-light fa-arrow-up-right\"><\/i>\n        <\/span>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2>What the reserve plan says, and what it does not explain<\/h2>\n<p>Anthias Labs said reserve repayments would stay within each mToken market. When reserves are insufficient, the plan would allocate them pro rata among eligible borrowers, omit actions at or below $1,000, and cap repayments at the lowest of reserves, available cash, or current borrower debt.<\/p>\n<p>The cbETH row lists $1,768,665.13 of gross bad debt, a $1,768,664.86 net shortfall, and $7,360.83 of reserves, but the report does not say whether the $1,000 cutoff, available cash, or another consideration produced the $0 allocation.<\/p>\n<p>The shortfall traces back to <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.moonwell.fi\/t\/mip-x43-cbeth-oracle-incident-summary\/2068\">a Feb. 15 oracle misconfiguration<\/a> that priced cbETH near $1.12 instead of roughly $2,200. Anthias Labs <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.moonwell.fi\/t\/anthias-labs-reserve-recommendations-8-24-26\/2197\">said liquidators seized<\/a> 1,096.317 cbETH and left the protocol with about $1.8 million in initial total bad debt.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.moonwell.fi\/t\/recovery-plan-cbeth-incident-and-moonwell-apollo-onboarding\/2084\">February recovery proposal<\/a> later calculated about $2.7 million in net losses across roughly 181 borrowers liquidated between Feb. 14 and 18, and proposed treasury funding followed by protocol-revenue repayments.<\/p>\n<p>Moonwell's help material says withdrawals\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.moonwell.fi\/en\/articles\/15426162-how-to-supply-assets\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">depend on<\/span> available liquidity<\/a>, so the API reading and two public complaints point to an unresolved liquidity question.<\/p>\n<p>Moonwell and Anthias Labs had not responded in the public forum
