Gox<\/a>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0 once the world\u2019s number one digital currency exchange, hackers stole more than $473 Million worth of virtual assets from the platform back in 2014.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/warnings-another-giant-bitcoin-exchange\/\">Bitfinex<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; touted as the second biggest hack in the history of cryptocurrencies, the Hong Kong-based exchange platform saw cyber-thieves get away with a staggering 120,000 BTC back in August 2016.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How can investors insulate themselves from such problems?<\/h2>\n<p>The easiest way to minimize risks associated with digital thefts is by keeping any virtual holdings in an offline wallet, such as a Ledger or Trezor \u2014 also referred to as cold wallets. However, for day-traders, this option is not only cumbersome but also quite impractical as it can be a pain to repeatedly transfer asset back-and-forth from an online storage medium to an offline one.<\/p>\n<p>Also worth noting is that recently, exchange platform Gemini Trust Co. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-04-25\/winklevoss-twins-hire-nasdaq-to-keep-cheaters-off-crypto-market\">solicited<\/a> the\u00a0services of financial powerhouse NASDAQ Inc. to keep tabs\u00a0on potentially abusive trade activities pertaining to Bitcoin and Ethereum that might be taking place on their servers.<\/p>\n<h2>Where do governments factor into all of activity is going to keep increasing as time goes on.<\/p>\n<p>While Japan established a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-02-02\/japan-regulators-face-scrutiny-after-second-major-crypto-heist\">licensing system<\/a> for digital-asset exchanges last year, countries like Malta have also <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/binance-malta\/\">been working to create an economic framework<\/a> that will help cement the island nations place as being one of the primary hubs for cryptocurrency trade and exchange.<\/p>\n<h2>Looking Ahead<\/h2>\n<p>Recently, Bank of England governor Mark Carney\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-03-02\/boe-s-carney-calls-for-regulation-to-end-cryptocurrency-anarchy\">called<\/a> for financial regulators across the world to end the so-called ongoing cryptocurrency \u201canarchy\u201d and hold this burgeoning industry to the same standards as the rest of the financial domain.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_45595\"
