{"id":497941,"date":"2025-09-11T21:30:18","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T20:30:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=497941"},"modified":"2025-09-12T09:35:53","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T08:35:53","slug":"blackrock-looking-to-tokenize-etf-shares-to-expand-its-digital-asset-infrastructure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/blackrock-looking-to-tokenize-etf-shares-to-expand-its-digital-asset-infrastructure\/","title":{"rendered":"BlackRock looking to tokenize ETF shares to expand its digital asset infrastructure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/blackrock\/\">BlackRock<\/a> explores tokenizing exchange-traded fund (ETF) shares as part of its push to expand its digital asset infrastructure beyond traditional market boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>As Bloomberg News reported on Sept. 11, the firm weighs creating blockchain-based versions of ETFs tied to real-world assets (RWA), including stocks, according to sources familiar with the confidential planning.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative builds on BlackRock's <a href=\"https:\/\/app.rwa.xyz\/treasuries\">$2.2 billion BUIDL<\/a> tokenized money-market fund, launched in March 2024, two months after the debut of its <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a> ETF.<\/p>\n<p>CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/larry-fink\/\">Larry Fink<\/a> previously stated that <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tokenized-assets-are-already-nearing-300-billion-led-by-stablecoins\/\">every financial asset can be tokenized<\/a>, most recently reiterating it in his 2025 annual letter to investors.<\/p>\n<p>Tokenized ETF shares would enable trading beyond Wall Street's standard hours, improve international access to US products, and create new collateral opportunities within crypto networks.<\/p>\n<p>The report comes in the same week as <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/nasdaq\/\">Nasdaq<\/a> filed with the SEC to <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/nasdaq-files-for-regulatory-nod-to-introduce-tokenized-stocks-and-etfs\/\">trade tokenized stocks and ETFs<\/a> on its platform.<\/p>\n<h2>Regulatory framework evolves<\/h2>\n<p>BlackRock has tested tokenized fund shares through <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/jpmorgan\/\">JPMorgan's<\/a> Kinexys infrastructure and positioned itself as an early adopter of digital settlement models.<\/p>\n<p>Money-market funds from <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/franklin-templeton\/\">Franklin Templeton<\/a> and BlackRock opened the pathway for the largest tokenization efforts. Excluding private credit, tokenized money funds are the largest RWA category, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/app.rwa.xyz\/treasuries\">$7.4 billion market cap<\/a> as of Sept. 11.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, ETFs offer broader asset exposure and trading mechanics that are well-suited for blockchain deployment.\u00a0Exchanges including <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/kraken\/\">Kraken<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/robinhood\/\">Robinhood<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/coinbase\/\">Coinbase<\/a> already offer tokenized stocks internationally or plan to do so.<\/p>\n<p>However, the report noted that current challenges include reconciling ETF settlement through Wall Street clearinghouses with blockchain's instant, 24-hour trading capabilities.\u00a0These challenges create technical and regulatory questions for custodians managing the transition between traditional and digital infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>BlackRock's exploration reflects mainstream finance's evaluation of blockchain technology for enhancing market infrastructure, including improvements in collateral flows and settlement speed.<\/p>\n<p>The firm's digital asset advocacy, combined with regulatory shifts, positions tokenized ETFs as another bridge between traditional and decentralized finance systems.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BlackRock explores tokenizing exchange-traded fund (ETF) shares as part of its push to expand its digital asset infrastructure beyond traditional market boundaries.
